Disfellowshipped for being fat and not watching my cholesterol

That's a point that my mother and I keep bringing on the table (giggle). You see, it's frustrating to see my father frown on anyone who is smoking because they are destroying the bodies God made for them (I agree about the badness of cigs but...) and then he eats junky and fatty food (a LOT) that's even more bad for the body. It's the exact same thing. Oh! If you do call the bethel to ask, yes! tell us everything!lol It's just another nonsense thing to me.

What about people who have lead based paint on their sills and asbestos on their pipes?
Shepparding calls now include a bio hazard inspection and a quick check of yer pipes.

I phoned. Funny, I talked to the same guy at Patterson that I talked to a month or so back when I was wondering how I could get the status of leaving the JW's and not be shunned as a former member like their website states.

Anyway, the conversation went like this. I explained that I had talked to the local elders about a family member who had just seen the doctor. The doctor said that my family member will die if he continues eating the fatty foods that he is. Then I asked why isn't there more direction on this as there is with smoking?

He stated, that there is plenty of direction about eating healthy foods.

I said, "Yes, but not with the same force as there is with smoking. You will get disfellowshipped for smoking, but not for this even though it is equally as bad for you."

He replied that, "Smoking is a sin, a defilement of the flesh."

I said, "Yes, but this is also a defilement of the flesh as the doctor has said, "You will die if you keep eating like this. Wouldn't that be the same as committing suicide?"

He said, "Well, perhaps if you want to look at it that way you should write us a letter."

I tried a few times to get him to open up more, but in the end he just kept suggesting I put it in writing. Finally, I said, "Hopefully he won't be dead by the time you guys get back to me." and hung up.

ROTFL!!! That is hilarious, Kwin! To me, the question is simple: Do you legislate what constitutes healthy or do you teach what constitutes healthy and let others decide for themselves? In the case of smoking, the answer is: We legislate. Why single that one out? What is the leading cause of death in the US? According to the CDC, Heart Disease: http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/lcod.htm What factors contribute that can be controlled? According to the AHA, a lot: http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=4726 Is this "magical knowledge" that Kwin somehow stumbled across? No, of course not. They know they have taken a stand against smoking, but they don't know why without science. The same science that is, according to them, so very clueless in so many other respects. It is really pitiful. OldSoul

Years ago I met a witness sister who was reproved for being soooooooooo fat. She was put on restriction and not allowed to represent Jehovah in the formal door to door ministry.

Actually, I did not meet her. We were out in service next door to her house and she came out to chase a few of her kids around the yard. She was very heavy, but not morbidly so in my opinion. We did not stop to say hi to her because her house and household were in quarantine for head lice.

I've known witnesses in such deplorable condition. Someone just has to reach out to them from the congregation. Usually some kind soul does, if not several. But some conditions are so baffling to the average person, it leaves the sufferer in a lonely isolated position.

oh man, this is one of the main reasons why i was so glad to leave the Troof, Its the cherry picking of opinions/medical advice to suit themselves! In that case when a specialist tells them they need a transfusion or theyre going to die, they practically orgasm at the woundrous opportunity to die for their Jehovah! Makes me sick! We had many morons like that in our congregation, take for instance one Brother who was going round saying the band Kiss, should never be listened to as they are Knights In Satans Service, and people gave this clown credence!!!! I still have a chuckle at that!

I staggers me that so called intellectual people can be swayed and lulled into believing the Borg's and any religion's teachings, its so.... middle ages!!

I guess Hermann (elder in my congregation) should be DF'd then for being too fat. I should ask him about his cholesterol level too. He also likes to drink.

The WBTS wouldn't dare touch that subject in all seriousness. They'd have to take privileges away from a whole lot of JWs if they did!

The congregation I seldom attend these days has 90% overweight people.

Poor people find so little joy in their present lives that if they find joy in eating, what the heck..., let them eat cake!

I agree DY, but why the double standard when it comes to smoking vs. eating? Just let them smoke too.

Perhaps it's that smoking costs so much. Money that could be better spent on hurricane relief the WWW.
