Everything hinges upon this separatist,elitist doctrine of uniqueness. many former JWS woke up when they discovered other churches/cults shared the identical conviction.

I think they could probably slowly change every single one of their doctrines over time and call it "new light" and the JWs would accept it.
As long as they control the information JWs get and reinforce it through avoidance of outside information especially from "apostates" they will continue to have a captive audience.

The Resurrection.
Because after they lose everything, there is still that chance of being resurrected. Regardless of what happens now, everything will be fine in the end. Win/Win situation.
The Resurrection is their last hope, their cure all.

The doctrine of "gnashing and smashing" - the flesh rotting off the bones, which are then picked clean. Call this fear, call this terror, call this whatever! Hell, if these folks were to believe today the doctrine of - "He who believes in me, lives forever." They would go home, chuck their Witness false doctrines, throw out the works of the Great Idol Maker Crooklyn, and relax.

LadyLee is right that doctrine is really irrelevant as long as it serves to distinguish them from other churches. Doctrine isolates and identifies the group. That's why I chose the premise of uniqueness as the most powerful teaching. The constantly changing doctrine is in fact a useful tool to satisfy the intellectual hunger. By always presenting something new there is always something to boast over and claim as a 'direction' from heaven.
