NEW ORLEANS - Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge Sunday, killing five or six, a deputy chief said. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal.

The contractors were walking across a bridge on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to fix the 17th Street Canal, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Corps.

Earlier Sunday, New Orleans Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people, killing five or six. Here is the latest Simon. Evidently, these persons were on their way to repair a canal. The police obviously shot first and asked questions later. There is just one tragedy after another in New Orleans. If these are the New Orleans police, they need to stand down and take some r and r before they go back on the job. I feel that the New Orleans police are too traumatized to make rational decisions at this time.

AP: Army Corps of Engineers says its contractors were not killed by police, but gunmen who fired at them were killed. More soon.

I agree, we should all simmer down and wait for the details...

Apparently the army said it was their people that were shot but is now saying they weren't.

Yes, just like the London police did a month or two ago after the bombings set everyone on edge. New Orleans is a very dangerous place right now, there's no denying it.

I'm glad people are finally getting out of there. Today's paper here in Dallas focused on as many positive stories as possible, about the people who are helping, not looting or shooting and I appreciated hearing that. As Jehovah's Witnesses, we were so used to hearing about the evils that people perpetrate on each other that it's nice to hear about the good that is also done. Does the good balance the evil? I don't know, but I like knowing it's there.

Personally, when London was in an uproar over the underground and bus bombings, I found comfort and vicarious pride (since I'm not British) in how Londoners pulled together and got through the disaster. We are hearing more and more stories like that out of the hurricane-devastated areas, and those are the stories that keep us going.

It's strange - they just kinda changed the story on BBC.

Yes, the first I heard was that the guy was running from the police even though they yelled to him to stop, and his visa was expired or some such thing. Then I heard that he was shot while he was down and that he wasn't running away. Either way, the poor sod was innocent. Did it ever come out which story was true?

NEW ORLEANS (Sept. 4) - Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge Sunday, killing five or six of them, a deputy chief said.

New Orleans police say the gunmen fired on a group of contractors traveling across the bridge while on their way to make repairs.

A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers says the 14 contractors were on their way to repair a canal. They were traveling across a bridge under police escort when they were fired upon.

The contractors were on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to fix the 17th Street Canal.

The shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

This seems to be the accurate story. Eight people were carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge and they opened fire on 14 contractors on their way to repair a canal. The police that were escorting the contractors returned fire and killed five or six of the gunmen. I retract my earlier statement about police opening fire and asking questions later. I just saw a scroll on CNN that reported no contractors were killed. It was the gunmen that were killed.

I say hoo-yah! Take notice thugs, if you're a punk and you want to act out Grand Theft Auto in N.O. you're gonna get shot and killed.

You do not have the right to run the city shooting and raping. Anyone who acts like that is unworthy of life, and should be lined up against a wall and shot in the head!

The freakin 82nd Airborne and 1st & 2nd Marine expeditionary forces are being deployed in N.O.'s right now. Those punks had their fun last week, I personaly hope they're stupid enough to continue with such front line soldiers policing the town. It'll be a few less bad guys for the rest of the world to worry about.
