At one time, the American dream was that success, fame and wealth could be obtained through thrift and hard work.
Another definition is the dream of owning one's own home, owning land. Many people came to the US from other countries where owning land was next to impossible for the average person.

I think the WIkipedia definition a very good one. And, when it gets right down to it, isn't Everyperson's Dream to have a happy, peaceful life, doing something one enjoys, no serious money troubles, with a loving family and a loyal group of friends?

So, me saying that Americans want to be on TV is generalising ... if so, then surely the American Dream itself is a sweeping generalisation !

The American Dream is a term coined to describe what waves of immigrants in the past were lured here by (my grandfather being one...from Sicily)....
What it has since become, do to Hollywood is a different animal.
It' kinda like saying "the truth"...means different things to different folks.
But it is certainly not a bad thing. Wheras reducing an entire population down to the level of shallow moron... well doesn't seem to friendly.

If that's the case, I've achieved it. One "extra" role in a nationally telavised tv show ten years ago and like three indie flicks.Heck, even one major supporting role!! Wanna hear what show? That's why I talk about it all the time!!
I guess I can die now.
My American dream is to be left a lone to do and say what I want, keep my money unless someone else really needs it, without the government shoving it's nose into my business and taking my money for stuff it does'nt need to give to to people who don't need it. Especially those who have way more money than I do. That's pretty much it.
Oh, yeah. And, i don't just wanna be on TV. Stage is fine. Here's the way I look at it, as a guy who acts from time to time.
Theater is life,
Film is art
Television is furniture.
So, no, I wanna be in movies. And have been. It's fun. even if very few people ever see them
Certainly each individual American has a personal interpretation of what HIS "American Dream" is.
But to really understand it, we have to look back in history to a time when there was no America, and ask what the Dream was that drove those brave and dangerous men to defy the King that ruled over them by divine right.
Their dream was this:

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.
