Can someone give me the honest, non-hollywood version? Is it a fantasy or something that Americans truly aspire to?
I think us Brit's need a dream.......

In talking to other American citizens one word comes up more than any other: Freedom.
It may mean something different to each American, but it is an underlying part of what we all would call "The American Dream."

You mean to tell me there is no "British Dream"?
Josie
I wrote a paper on this.
Basically, the American Dream is a label that can be put on anything. For some, its a steady job. For others, its a Bentley in the drive way, and a supermodel in the bed.
For others, its just living in America...
Just because there is no "British Dream" doesn't mean that they don't / can't dream just like we do...
Oh we Brits' have our dreams - two weeks in the sun, getting home before 6pm, a lazy weekend in the garden, hanging the boss - it's just that our desires aren't branded and packaged like 'The American Dream'.
Know what I mean?
something that Americans truly aspire to
Surely is it simply to be on TV and then life for many of them is complete.
All I pressed was copy and paste, and a post appeared, honest!
I'm not a big fan of Michael Howard, but he explains the British Dream in a speech which became known as the British Dream speech... "In Britain it actually does happen. There are countless examples of people from humble beginnings who make it to the top: who live the British Dream. So we should talk about it. We should embrace it. We should celebrate it. I want everyone to live the British Dream. " And to be honest, I always thought that was what the American dream was also, that anyone can build a life for themselves.
(Whispers in Simon's ear) Depressingly, that seems to be pretty much the Brit/Chav dream too. Thank you Big Brother, I'm a Celebrity, Survivor et al.
Sometimes I truly believe that we 40-somethings are the first generation to be cooler than our kids!
