    Hi Pole,

I fully agree that their are mental gymnastics to jump through in any belief in religion. Here are the statements that I choose to let guide my belief from my religious leaders:

Man, by searching, cannot find out god. Never, unaided, will he discover the truth about the beginning of human life. The Lord must reveal Himself, or remain unrevealed; and the same is true of the facts relating to the origin of Adam's race--God alone can reveal them. Some of these facts, however, are already known, and what has been made known it is our duty to receive and retain....

Our religion is not hostile to real science. That which is demonstrated, we accept with joy; but vain philosophy, human theory, and mere speculations of men, we do not accept nor do we adopt anything contrary to divine revelation or to good common sense. But everything that tends to right conduct, that harmonizes with sound morality and increases faith in Deity, finds favor with us no matter where it may be found.

Upon the fundamental doctrines of the Church we are all agreed. Our mission is to bear the message of the restored gospel to the world. Leave geology, biology, archaeology, and anthropology, not one of which has to do with the salvation of the souls of mankind, to scientific research, while we magnify our calling in the realm of the Church. . .

...On the subject of organic evolution the Church has officially taken no position.

Any of you guys ever see "Orgazmo". It's a live-action flick by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (the South Park writers) about a Mormon missionary in L.A. who becomes a pornstar so that he afford to get married in the Temple. This is one of the funniest movies ever, but can be a little hard to find.

2/A urim and thummim were used to translate the Book of Mormon because that's what constitutes the ability to be a seer. They were after the model of the U/T of Moses but were not the same. How else was he supposed to translate the record??

*shakes head in disgust*... As a linguist and aspiring translator / interpreter i find this mildly insulting.

IMO, religion IS the vain philosophy, theory and speculations of man. Where else but in religion would you find a man, a hat and two stones translating a book? Is that demonstrated in a church? If so, i would love to come and see it, those stones could really help my future career... (no really, i'm very open-minded)....

No dora the stones are no longer around. That was on purpose....or at lease according to John Smith it was that way. Buried somewhere.

the plates and u/t where taken back to heaven however that does lead to the question about why bother to bury them in the first place...

I've seen that! Pretty funny. They have it on TV here in Canada every once and a while.

My question is why did the Book of Mormon need any, let alone several, revisions, if the U&T were used to translate this record word for word? What could people use to 'correct' what God gave directly?

I own a facsimile of the first edition of the BoM, and there a great many interesting differences between that version and each subsequent one. Changes in doctrine (omitting important words), changing grammar, spelling, colloquialisms... If that was truly the "restored gospel", why did it need further revision--and especially so quickly?
