I am surprised that a lot of coments were around the sexual habits of gay males.
Outside of Western countries, HIV is mainly in the hetro community.
I travel a lot in Asia and it is rife amongst female prostitutes.Poor buggers. I don't spend a lot of time thinking about where it started but more on keeping me and others safe and everhopeful of a cure.

Ok - here is another thought. If HIV is sexually transmitted, and transmitted through ruptured vessels during anal sex, 15% of hetero and promiscouos couples are said to engage in anal sex too. One would expect to find a corresponding incidence of HIV in hetero couples too. But we don't! Mmmm.....makes you wonder, doesn't it?
Here is another rather interesting phenomena - Study by Lange, Lozovsky et al. "Lifetime Needle Sharing Experience and HIV Antibody Prevalence Among IV Drug Abusers" shows Sana Antonio with 99% needle sharing and 2% seropositive. New York with 70% needle sharing and 61% seropositive. Tampa with 72% needle sharing and 0% positive. Mmmmm......
Don Francis from the CDC noted a "laundry list" of feline leukemia-like diseases asociated with AIDS. The National Cancer institute in 1971 identified 27 known retrovirus contaminants of Rhesus monkey kidneys, used to make vaccines, of which only one, the Simian Foamy Virus SFV was identified as containing reverse transcriptase - making it susceptible to humans. But on its own, it did not cause cancer, unless recombinants were introduced to cause mutations, such as the Simian Virus SV40 and Feline Leukemia Virus FELV, which then produced human white blood cell (WBC) dysfunction, leukemias, lymphomas, sacomas, progressive wasting, (sound familiar?) and utimately, death, in cats, mice, chickens and yes, humans. Mmmmm....The plot thickens.

Here is another challenge. Refer me to one, yes, even just on, double blind study that proves AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease. Just one.

AZT is a random killer of infected and noninfected cells. AZT cannot discriminate among them. It kills T-cells, B-cells, red blood cells-it kills all cells. No exceptions. It wipes out everything.

HIV / AIDS is not caused nor created by any lubricant or anal sex, or AZT drugs, or poppers....this is plain WRONG. These are ancedotal studies done with HIV poz men alreday at best. At worst, flat out lies and innuendo. Very similar to the brain size study of a few years back about gay men having slightly larger hypothalamus'..they were HIV poz....so did the HIV cause it or the sexual identity? Who knows. Each study needs to be looked at to understand it's implications, theories, and results.

Not just bottoms (receptive) partners are at risk. They do have a higher risk as do females because of the length of time semen is in contact with anal / vaginal tissue. Both of which are blood rich areas w/ thin membranes. The misconcepton of anal tearing and rupture is a bit overstated as well. It's as if everytime someone has anal sex some sort of damage is being done. This isn't true either.
Top virologists have a hard time identifying viral structures and new virus strains from older ones. This is a TOUGH science and a tough booger of a disease. Men and women FAR SMARTER and more dedicated than me are working night and day on this. Viral studies are very complicated. Look at the common cold, viral meningitis, HIV, HPV, etc.
Also, occupational exposure of primate handlers in the United States has resulted in the transmission of a new emerging retrovirus (foamy) in humans, and although there is no disease, it does indicate that zoonotic transmission of such agents is ongoing. This information offers new insight into the virologic mechanisms that HIV uses to adapt to human hosts and can contribute to the development of HIV prevention strategies such as vaccine design and the ability to develop new diagnostic tools designed to identify emerging HIV variants.

The 4th Theory is Dark Continent - Discover magazine mentioned the idea that the origin of AIDS might have had something to do with the chaos that followed colonial withdrawal from central Africa. After these colonial powers withdrew a "free for all" ensued. Colonial rule was not generous or kind but brutal and repressive w/ reports of massive deaths...somewhere in the 50% range. Forced labor camps of thousands were the rule of the day under these powers. The Africans had poor sanitaion, poor diet and exhausting labor demands. It is hard to imagine better condtions for the establishment of an immune-defciency disease. Where imagination fails, let history serve. To care for the health of the laborer, well-meaning but undersupplied doctors routinely inoculated workers against smallpox and dysentery, and they treated sleeping sickness with serial injections. The problem is, the multiple injections given to arriving gangs of tens or hundreds were adminstered with only a handful of syringes. Transfer of pathogens would have been inevitable. And to appease the laboreres, in some of the camps sex workers were officially encouraged.
This is the 4th and final theory that most doctors and virologists believe today. As more and more is discovered one of these theories may be advanced further, or maybe a combination of these theories will be proven.

AIDS is a syndrome where the assumption is the HIV found in such people causes the syndrome.
I suppose one immediate angle is 'how many people would be diagnosed with AIDS, but are not because although they are symptomatically identical, they have no HIV, not any other disease that would produce such symptoms."
If lots of people without HIV are dropping dead of a sydrome identical to AIDS, then maybe the incidence of HIV in those with AIDS is to some extent coincidental, and in fact the non HIV AIDS suffers and HIV AIDS suffers have the same sydrome and HIV is not the cause of the syndrome.
If very few people are symptomatically identical to AIDS, but have no HIV, not any other disease that would produce such symptoms, then statistically speaking it is rather high that the presence of HIV is the major factor in the disease.
Does that make sense, in a 'reverse end of the telescope' fashion?
As far as I am aware, there are not loads of people dropping dead of an AIDS-identical syndrome who do not have HIV.
Personally I think this is one issue where the 'Emperor' DOES have clothes, and the 'little boy in the crowd' doesn't know what he's talking about.
I've not read up on the subject for a while, but last time I couldn't find one alternate theory to HIV causing AIDS that seems better than the theory it does. WIth my level of biology I can follow much, but not all of the science, especially if I can put some time in to research. I know some very reputable scientists disgree, but I don't agree with them, just as I don't agree with some evolutionists, because I find other theories more likely.

AZT is not a cure, nor a guarantee of avoiding death, so the fact you "have known people who were treated with AZT who are no longer around to tell about it" is not surprising and carries no useful data.
And it is the few 'immunes' (as I understand it there may be several mechanisms of immunity) whose presumably genetic querks give them immunity, that offer another avenue for a cure.
And anyone who's had anal sex, whether topping or bottoming, knows it's not as damaging as it might seem to be or is often described as. I suggest you refer to 'Little Anal Whores 9' for further reference.

Um,,, I haven't found a single double blind study that shows that if you take a 9mm Baretta, place it to the temple and pull the trigger...that the gun really caused the death. Maybe it was the touching of metal against the temple....or maybe it was the vibration of the gun as it went off. NO! The fricken bullet killed them. How many people would you like to infect needlessly? Would you volunteer for this experiment where you are injected w/ HIV infected semen? Didn't think so. This would go against any ethical testing guidelines.

Here again your perceptions are not reality....Some people with HIV go 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years without any symptoms. Some people come down with AIDS in a few months. This is one of the areas of study scientists are working on. One of the more recent studies I've seen in HIV infected yet AIDS resistent men they have a "Black Plague" precursor in their genes. Some how the plague genes prevent progression....why? Lot's of theories. Viruses work exponentially to produce new virions and disease. This statement confuses virus in a cell, where this is true, with disease in individual. There are numerous examples of slow progressive viral diseases.
Just a quick couple of studies:
Combination drug therapy effectively reduces 90 percent of HIV deaths in African-American injection drug users when they are given ample access to care, according to a new Academy study in the June issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.
However the general death rate from AIDS has gone down steadily from a 10% chance of dying in any year if you have HIV, to a 2% chance in 1997 when combination therapy was introduced, to a less than one per cent chance now.
