I think the custom should be to say "bless you" only after a fart.

Our small town picture theater, back in the days when you could still smoke in them, had deck chairs for the seating. These were just great. You could light a fart through them without burning your butt.
I don't think many of the patrons were able to resist the temptation to join in the competition to light up the theater the best.
