old habits die hard I guess

But with the UK's April retail sales figures in, showing the biggest drop since records began in the mid 1990s, I think we are about to hit another recession. Just so those in the USA know what I'm talking about, here in the UK personal debt here recently broke the 1 trillion mark and property prices have maxed out and are just starting to show signs of dropping, with most young people unable to afford to get on the ladder.

Recession sucks. But so does severe inflation!

Yes Recession sucks - but its one thing that can force prices down. If you can hold on to your job during recession and see house prices drop by huge percentages then that is a good thing. Bring on the doom!

Now you know why I appoligised for being a purveyor of doom.

Maybe it's just me - am I on my own on this? To me, for retail figures to be down 5% IN ONE MONTH, it is people voting with their wallets. They are saying "we're not going to take it anymore" - that is how I see recesion. Presumably, if you have a family and recession puts your job at risk - you might not see it that way.

I am absolutely gob-smacked (love that English term!) at the prices of homes in England---especially London. How does anyone afford to live there? I watch a tv program called The House Doctor.....she's an American interior designer who goes over to England to help people fix up their homes so they will sell. I saw one the other day, it was a hideous one bedroom, basement apartment (or 'flat') somewhere in London with a living room, no dining area, tiny kitchen, bathroom and one bedroom and it was on the market for about 150,000 pounds which is about $315,000 Canadian dollars. I couldn't believe it. Hell it would be half that price even in Toronto which is ridiculously expensive.....

It is not all bad news... maybe it means a crushing defeat for New Labour next time round.
