as some of you may know, i am a recently self-deconverted JW. the experience of deconversion was at times emotional. i have compiled a list of songs i would listen to on those emotionally turbulent occasions. some of them i just liked, and so they ended up being included. but others had lyrics that meant something to me at the time. probably not what the writer had in mind, but oh well, i turned them into what i needed. for example, listening to "old man" by neil young, made me think of "old man" as "God": "old man look at my life...i need someone to love me the whole day through." or tom waits in "come on up to the house: "come down off the cross we could use the wood...". or, leonard cohen in "bird on a wire" and thinking about all the lost and wasted time i devoted to the borg: "but i swear, by this song, and by all i have done wrong, i will make it all up to thee." and of course john lennon, in "imagine": "...and no religion too...".

does anyone else have any songs that they feel describe any sort of conflict or pain or elation or happieness at leaving the WTBTS? or does anyone have a song to add? after some suggestions, i am going to compile a mix cd called:
"Leaving the Truth - Songs to Destroy Your Faith By"

i look forward to any thoughts. here is my list (in no order of importance) cheers!:

take it with me - tom waits

I remember this time all to well...I also turned to my music for solace and for inspiration when times were hard

Here is a select list of the tracks i associate with the feelings then and the feelings now about leaving.

    1. REM - Losing my Religion because the lyrics are like a cry for privacy in an hour of need and totally in accordance with my feelings of being at the end of my tether.
    2. The Levellers - Sell Out again the lyrics make mention of being sold down the river and thats exactly how i felt upon exit.
    3. Metallica - Nothing else matters no real lyrical relationship but i guess at this point in my life...nothing else did matter other than what i was going through.
    4. Depeche Mode - Blashemous Rumours because god has got a sick sense of humour if he or she exists
    5. Marrilion - The Short Straw no real reason...just a great melancholy track.
    6. U2 - I still havent found what im looking for because ive not despite searching the highest mountain...in a figurative sense.

    Just a few for ya

"...Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV,
And you think you're so clever and classless and free,
But you're still fucking peasents as far as I can see... "

    Working Class Hero
    John Lennon

"Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No." Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61."

    Highway 61 Revisited
    Bob Dylan

"I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
    Well, I try my best
To be just like I am,
    But everybody wants you
    To be just like them.
They sing while you slave and I just get bored.
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more."

    Maggie's Farm
    Bob Dylan

"So, so you think you can tell
    Heaven from Hell,
    Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
    From a cold steel rail?
    A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
    Your heros for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
    Cold comfort for change?
    And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
    We're just two lost souls
    Swimming in a fish bowl,
    Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
    What have we found?
    The same old fears.
    Wish you were here."

    Dear God

Dear God, hope you got the letter and...

I pray you can make it better down here

I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer

But all the people that you made in your image

See them starving on their feet

'Cause they don't get enough to eat from

    God,

    I can't believe in you

Dear God, sorry to disturb you but...

I feel that I should be heard loud and clear

We all need a big reduction in amount of tears

And all the people that you made in your image

See them fighting in the street

'Cause they can't make opinions meet about

    God,

    I can't believe in you

Did you make disease and the diamond blue?

Did you make mankind after we made you?

    And the devil too!

Dear God don't know if you've noticed but...

Your name is on a lot of quotes in this book

And us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look

And all the people that you made in your image

Still believing that junk is true

Well I know it ain't, and so do you, dear God

    I can't believe in

    I don't believe in

I won't believe in heaven and hell

No saints, no sinners, no devil as well

No pearly gates, no thorny crown

You're always letting us humans down

The wars you bring, the babes you drown

Those lost at sea and never found

And its the same the whole world 'round

The hurt I see helps to compound

That Father, Son and Holy Ghost

    Is just somebody's unholy hoax

And if you're up there you'd perceive

That my heart's here upon my sleeve

If there's one thing I don't believe in

    It's you

    Dear God--XTC
