The first time I saw this procedure of someone going up to the stage, the speaker seating back, and then this one "serving" the speaker with the emblems was really weird too. Totally agree!
But it wasn't always like that; I think the Society might have made it to be that way not long ago (?).
Very weird because, remember, the speaker is the guy who hand the things to the attendents below. I think that if he would partake, this was enough of an opportunity to do it. The way the're doing now looks like a ritual...
