JH, did you see the former Mayor of Montreal saying if elected he will fix the pot holes? He even said they had sufficeint monies to repair the roads. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

It is terrible in this area and getting worse. One taxi driver had his shocks replaced three times!

Here in the UK, we pay a road tax for each vehicle, varying in cost depending on how many wheels, even my motorbike pays 45 pounds per annum, and only 10 per cent of this is required to maintain the roads, the other 90% goes into general taxation. This is before we even get onto fuel taxes, let's not even go there!

Here in the states, I rate Arkansas, Kentucky, and Louisianna as having some of the worst roads. The thing is, they get fuel taxes from commercial transport as well as road usage taxes from them...plus what dribs and drabs they get from the general driving public. Most of that money goes to things non-road related. The three aforementioned states are bad about not putting a big enough percentage towards road building and maintenance, so they have terrible roads. Nevada, on the other hand, has mostly great roads. They get plenty of tax revenue from the casinos. Here in Tennessee...we have some that are great and some not so great....but not bad overall.

Pothole central here. I mean there are freaking potholes around here that you can get lost in. Last seen traveling down I-77, we are checking the potholes now for signs of them. But some of the roads are just beautiful, it can be sort of weird, a real mixed bag.

JH, that sucks. You have such extremes there as well. (having spent a winter in Ste. Foy *shudder*, which is not even 'northern' PQ)

The provincial govt is building a new twinned concrete highway here. It's much better for our northern climate, with its temperature shifts.

It's been very interesting to watch this superhighway being built. The infrastructure is more costly, but it's the long-term benefits that will matter to the individual driver as well as the environment.

    Sustainable Benefits of Concrete Highways
    Social

    • Reduced congestion compared to regular maintenance requirements of asphalt pavements
    • Less car maintenance resulting from road defects
    • Safer driving conditions resulting from better night-time visibility due to reflective nature of concrete?s lighter pavement surface
    • Smooth ride that is long lasting due to resistance to deformation such as rutting and shoving

    Economic

    • More cost-effective over lifetime of pavement due to reduced maintenance
    • No costly load restrictions to trucking industry required during springtime thaw
    • Fuel savings for trucks
    • Reduced lighting requirements / costs due to reflective surface
    • Requires a narrower subgrade width due to less granular base, thereby reducing costs for
      excavation and aggregates.

    Environmental

    • Reduced emissions associated with truck fuel
    • Recycled concrete pavement can be re-used as road base
    • Reduced lighting requirement uses less electricity for lighting
    • Minimizes the amount of non-renewable resources being consumed for construction
    • Concrete pavement can incorporate other industries by-products such as fly ash, blast furnace slag and silica fume to enhance properties and long-term performance

Come on down to Eastern Canada, drive on our new "Nice Road", built to last.

We have great beaches and parks, too!
