The Watchtower's greatest strength is its ability to get 6 million people to put their lives 'on hold' and obey them without
question. By getting publishers to reject critical, analytical thinking, the Directors and Governing Body continue their rule
with little impediment ( other than a growing malaise in the Western world).
This strength also exposes a severe weakness:
Not everyone can be a brainless zombie!
Running a modern corporation requires expertise and critical thinking. If the organization happens to be international,
the importance of this increases exponentially. You must have competent lawyers, technicians, accountants, medical
authorities, and planners. If you don't, you're headed off a cliff.
The paradox is that these people are among the least likely to remain unquestioning Witnesses - because of their
thinking ability. Hence, I note with interest various reports that have appeared about the Society:
Begging for lawyers
Training their own lawyers
Being forced to accept college training - because Bethel had no choice but to send brothers for increased education
Bringing in external accountants to analyse their expenses
Buying expensive graphic/printing equipment and finding it unused/misused due to lack of expertise
Converting from letterpress to phototypesetting - as advised by brothers who are now 'apostates'!
Further evidence of this problem can be seen in the continuing poor quality of research and writing in the publications,
particularily the magazines. It's little wonder that a reduction in the Awake printing has been sought - in addition to financial
reasons.
So, while a vast unquestioning crowd support the Watchtower in its aims, it would only take a few or perhaps even one
individual to bring it crashing down. During the Rutherford reign, an eccentric brother named Arthur Goux nearly ordered
publishers to 'nail' one of the Judges' pronouncements to church doors! ( Imagine the possible aftermath!)
They critically depend on a small number of 'men in the middle' as Circuit Overseers and skilled agents. These men
'hold the cards' as to the Watchtower's security. While they may not openly rebel, it would only take a few honest mistakes
-------- or acts of sabotage to create precipitous change. More than that, the Society may have to compromise simply
to retain them as workers.
If the Directors of the WTS haven't considered the above, they are fools , indeed.
