The Watchtower's Achilles Heel

The Watchtower's greatest strength is its ability to get 6 million people to put their lives 'on hold' and obey them without

question. By getting publishers to reject critical, analytical thinking, the Directors and Governing Body continue their rule

with little impediment ( other than a growing malaise in the Western world).

This strength also exposes a severe weakness:

Not everyone can be a brainless zombie!

Running a modern corporation requires expertise and critical thinking. If the organization happens to be international,

the importance of this increases exponentially. You must have competent lawyers, technicians, accountants, medical

authorities, and planners. If you don't, you're headed off a cliff.

The paradox is that these people are among the least likely to remain unquestioning Witnesses - because of their

thinking ability. Hence, I note with interest various reports that have appeared about the Society:

    Begging for lawyers

    Training their own lawyers

Being forced to accept college training - because Bethel had no choice but to send brothers for increased education

Bringing in external accountants to analyse their expenses

Buying expensive graphic/printing equipment and finding it unused/misused due to lack of expertise

Converting from letterpress to phototypesetting - as advised by brothers who are now 'apostates'!

Further evidence of this problem can be seen in the continuing poor quality of research and writing in the publications,

particularily the magazines. It's little wonder that a reduction in the Awake printing has been sought - in addition to financial

    reasons.

So, while a vast unquestioning crowd support the Watchtower in its aims, it would only take a few or perhaps even one

individual to bring it crashing down. During the Rutherford reign, an eccentric brother named Arthur Goux nearly ordered

publishers to 'nail' one of the Judges' pronouncements to church doors! ( Imagine the possible aftermath!)

They critically depend on a small number of 'men in the middle' as Circuit Overseers and skilled agents. These men

'hold the cards' as to the Watchtower's security. While they may not openly rebel, it would only take a few honest mistakes

-------- or acts of sabotage to create precipitous change. More than that, the Society may have to compromise simply

    to retain them as workers.

If the Directors of the WTS haven't considered the above, they are fools , indeed.

That's quite an Achilles Heel! At that size it shouldn't be too hard to aim an arrow right into the quick of it! (zero'ing in on my aim)...

    Excellent summary, good read.

So why AREN'T THERE more CO's, DO's "seeing the light"? Are they so busy "traveling" they have no time to spend getting "continuing credits" off the internet?

I'd love to stop in here someday and see the names of some of my former COs/DOs - PM, ME, DT, etc. -- as JWD members, lol. I liked those guys, they were a hoot.

I wonder if there is a "underground network" of "disgruntled COs/DOs"... probably.

COs and DOs I thinks have the most to lose if they rock the boat. Imagine being a 50, 60, 70 y/o man with nothing. No job, no retirement, no skills. You got squat. I think some of them know, but all the ones I've ever met are staunch company men, and all they got is the company. So they stick with the company. Come heller high water.

"come heller high water" - LOL!

Yeah, you're probably right about not having squat so sticking with the company. But what/when do they get to "retire" as WT Company traveling regional salesmen? I'm sure the "real Jesus" would give them a "job" if they jumped WT-ship! (seriously).

Also, I'd sure hate to be a sista in the middle of "the pause" and having to "live on the road" like they do. I'd go nutty! :-/

But what/when do they get to "retire" as WT Company traveling regional salesmen?

In my circuit there are 4 retired COs. The older ones have a place at the local halls where they are assigned. One was built a house on the ass hall grounds and one was young enough when he left to go into biz for himself.

I dont know the details but I can tell you they are assigned to the more affluent halls in the area. They bros there take care of their needs? Pension from the WTS? I dunno. There housing and car is paid for tho.

IP_SEC, Just a question? Who pays for their houses and cars? Not the WTS, only the poor publisher to whom they are assigned to.[inflicted on] At a One day assembly the visiting speaker was bagging a C/O who was getting older for wondering how he was going to take care of himself when he finishes Circuit work. "Hasn't he heard of Matt 6:33?" he said. What an A-Hole

    metatron,

Thanks for yet another thought-provoking post. You've been around about as long as i have on JWD and I've appreciated that whenever i see your name on a post it's gotta be worth the read and this one is no exception!

I think we have a similar experience downunder - my only reservation would be on this as a sign of the imminence of the Society's death - I think that's still a long way off. Nevertheless there can be no doubt that the "life" has gone out of the Borg! Oh happy day!

BTW we've had a bethel elder here who went off to university each day to do his legal studies - such is the dearth of available qualified people that they can draw on for "greater privileges", so that was this man's assignment.

    Cheers, Ozzie

Ozzie - I think I agree here. A long way from the defrib machine I fear. But it is good to see such 'negative' reports as the annual.

Thanks IP-SEC, sounds like a good retirement plan for those who can get it!

As geevee said, it appears it's not an Equal Opportunity Retirement Plan, however, depending on the 'generosity' of the dubs where the CO/DOs are "put out to pasture."

How cruel to tell an old man, "Keep on seeking... and all will be provided..." grrrr.

I would not imagine the WTS takes out Social Security on it's "volunteer" traveling servants all during their years of their "service," so that they would at least have SS available to them upon their "retirement"?
