Is Valentine's Day Overrated?

Maybe that is why the JWs just renounce all holidays except for the Memorial, Thanksgiving, and Superbowl Sunday. It's easier to understand what's expected when you just have a few.

The reasons they renounce such things are why you are here today. It's good to know that you can celebrate whatever you want, that you have that choice!! You may not agree with the commercialism of Christmas or Easter, but hey, you can choose to celebrate it or not! I personally am fed up with rushing at Christmas each year, but I couldn't imagine being told I could not celebrate it. Birthdays are for my kids, I enjoy watching others when they receive gifts from me. Again, it's a matter of choice and aren't you glad you have one and can celebrate whatever you want the way you want??

when you should be showing your valentine love every day of the year

That's true, but that's what the dubs say about every holiday. No need for Thanksgiving, we should be thankful every day. And so on.

In truth, I think it's great to set aside a special day to honor special things. Valentine's Day, to me at least, is a celebration of love. What's wrong with showing your love every day, and then celebrating it on a special day each year? There's so much pain in the world--celebrating love for each other is a good thing.

Is it overrated? No, I don't think so. I think it's underrated. I think it should be expanded to be more about love, not just romantic love, but love for friends and family, too.

As far as the commercialism goes, if your hubby or anyone else feels that way, they need not exchange gifts. It shouldn't preclude them from celebrating the holiday though.

Has anyone ever tried this one: Why celebrate the memorial. We should be remembering Jesus' passover everyday.

So no flowers. No gift. No bear. No candy (not that I really need it). But I didn't get a card either (I had one for him just in case).

Gee, would have loved to have gotten one of those for V-Day. None of the guys I'm dating even bothered to give me anything. I don't think I'll be able to wish my psych instructor a belated happy happy; wouldn't want to push the envelope like I usually do(I did start a thread about that yesterday, but can't find it).

I like Valentine's Day. I don't care one bit if it's commercialized. Afterall, that's why I celebrate Christmas. I see these days as days to eat, drink, and be merry. Not that I can't do that everyday, but I'd feel guilty if I did. So I use holidays as an excuse to eat too much, spend too much on presents and just have fun.

Side question: Is it inappropriate for a married person to give out Valentines and receive Valentines from someone other than their spouse?

I have to agree with you...its fun...and we all know that we should love our partners all year round butthat excuse for not celebrating Valentines or any other holiday is both a cop out and an excuse to be tight as a nats chaff.

    Long live Valentines....

PS) I got my partner a Kitten for Valentines...and I got aftershave...we had a nice meal out and enjoyed the evening....whats wrong in that i say?
