    On tonight's news:

Dead pets threaten Beijing's 'green' Olympics 5:35 PM December 16

Residents of Beijing are worried that the careless disposal of dead pets is hurting their campaign for a "green" Olympic Games to be held in the capital in 2008, Xinhua news agency said.

Of the more than 200 pets that die each day in Beijing, only one is cremated.

The rest are either buried or dumped in trash cans, Xinhua said.

Pets were shunned in the days of Mao Zedong as a symbol of bourgeois decadence, but pet pooches have become increasingly popular in the last decade as living standards have risen.

"Quite a number of pet owners bury their pets either in the lawns of residential quarters or in public places, and quite a number of dead pets end up in the trash cans of residential communities," Liao Yumin, manager of the Beijing Boai Animal Crematorium, was quoted as saying.

"The careless burial of dead animals could result in hazardous pollution as rainwater or flooding runs over the bodies," he said.

The issue came to the attention of authorities last year when civet cats, considered a delicacy in the south, were found to be linked with an outbreak of SARS, he added.

In an online survey by the Beijing municipal government, "citizens have shown concern that the careless disposal of dead pets in the city might do harm to the capital Beijing as it has been exerting itself to host a green Olympics in 2008, one of the goals of which is to improve waste treatment in Beijing", Xinhua said.

At the end of June, Beijing had 417,731 registered dogs, an increase of more than 7,000 over 2003, show statistics from the city public security bureau.

The actual number of pets in the city was estimated at more than a million, Xinhua said.

I have three cats tellin me what to do. When they want to eat, to go out, come in, you get the picture. They are wonderful. I also keep food outside for the strays around here in the winter. I have no snakes or mice in my yard. And my neighbor now has no frogs in her pond either.

Yuk. I am not a pet lover. I have a cat that I inherited from my grandfather. I feel pretty sorry for him, he was raised with 90 year olds and lived a quiet peaceful life until the day he entered my home.

The kids love him so much they torture him.

I will never own a dog. I don't understand the need to have an invasive animal living in my home. The lick, bark, ruin the backyard and need tons of attention.

I'll keep my kids and leave the dogs to China.

I like "some" cats. Any cat that pisses on anything I own I despise however. I love dogs and I have ALWAYS had a dog since I was a kid. I get closer to my dog than some family members and I grieve more for them if they die.....more than I have for a family member.........weird, I know.

A pet dog to me, is the ultimate example of what true loyalty and forgivness is all about.

I love cats and always had one. I never had a dog, and this could explain why I'm not attracted to them.

I've never been to mainland China but I do remember my first business trip to Taipei, Taiwan several years ago. I was SHOCKED by the number of stray dogs roaming the streets. They were everywhere! My host told me that puppies are very popular gifts but once they grow up people no longer want them and simply dump them on the streets. What was really sad to see was some full grown dogs with "choked down" necks because the dam owner didn't even bother to remove the coller when they dumped the dog. Anyway, I was told that they did try and convince the Koreans to come and get the dogs but were told that they had plenty of their own. On my next visit some about six months later, I didn't see a single dog running around. Never did find out how they solved the problem. Maybe the Koreans changed their minds.
