Dawn, I love that joke.
This reminds me of what actually happened when my grandmother was dying. She woke up one day from a nap and when she saw all the people around her bed, she became very upset. My dad asked what was wrong and she answered, "My whole life I taught people that death was only sleeping. Now I'm dead and I see that I mislead so many people."
My dad assured her she wasn't dead yet (sorry, I can't help smiling at the wrong time when I type that - Monty Python and all) and that seemed to comfort her. I wish I could have known what happened while she was sleeping to make her think she was dead. I miss her.
