Johnny Cash was a class act. He struggled with drugs, and his own human weakness. He kept up with the times and wrote sngs that caused people to reflect. I have his "personal jesus" originally done by Depche mode. it sounds very good. One of his CD's "the man comes around" is so true, johnny cash was not lost in the past, he was current and fresh the day he died. Another i love is Ira hayes

    Johnny Cash Lyrics

The Ballad Of Ira Hayes Lyrics

    Ira Hayes,
    Ira Hayes

    [CHORUS:]
    Call him drunken Ira Hayes
    He won't answer anymore
    Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

Gather round me people there's a story I would tell
About a brave young Indian you should remember well
From the land of the Pima Indian
    A proud and noble band
Who farmed the Phoenix valley in Arizona land

Down the ditches for a thousand years
The water grew Ira's peoples' crops
'Till the white man stole the water rights
    And the sparklin' water stopped

    Now Ira's folks were hungry
And their land grew crops of weeds
    When war came, Ira volunteered
And forgot the white man's greed

    [CHORUS:]
    Call him drunken Ira Hayes
    He won't answer anymore
    Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

There they battled up Iwo Jima's hill,
    Two hundred and fifty men
But only twenty-seven lived to walk back down again

And when the fight was over
    And when Old Glory raised
Among the men who held it high
    Was the Indian, Ira Hayes

    [CHORUS:]
    Call him drunken Ira Hayes
    He won't answer anymore
    Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

    Ira returned a hero
    Celebrated through the land
He was wined and speeched and honored; Everybody shook his hand

But he was just a Pima Indian
No water, no crops, no chance
At home nobody cared what Ira'd done
And when did the Indians dance

    [CHORUS:]
    Call him drunken Ira Hayes
    He won't answer anymore
    Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

    Then Ira started drinkin' hard;
    Jail was often his home
They'd let him raise the flag and lower it
    like you'd throw a dog a bone!

    He died drunk one mornin'
Alone in the land he fought to save
Two inches of water in a lonely ditch
Was a grave for Ira Hayes

    [CHORUS:]
    Call him drunken Ira Hayes
    He won't answer anymore
    Not the whiskey drinkin' Indian
Nor the Marine that went to war

Yeah, call him drunken Ira Hayes
But his land is just as dry
And his ghost is lyin' thirsty
In the ditch where Ira died

That's a very profound song, Wednesday. Very moving and very sad. This excerpt makes me think of this song by Neil Young:

(My favorite version of this comes from the 4-Way Street LP CS&N Live

Don't Let It Bring You Down

    Artist/Band: Neil Young
    Lyrics for Album:

    After The Gold Rush

Old man lying by the side of the road
With the lorries rolling by,Blue moon sinking from the weight of the load
And the buildings scrape the sky,
Cold wind ripping down the alley at dawn
    And the morning paper flies,
Dead man lying by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.
Don't let it bring you down
    It's only castles burning,
    Find someone who's turning
    And you will come around.

Blind man running through the light of the night
With an answer in his hand,
Come on down to the river of sight
And you can really understand,Red lights flashing through the window in the rain,
Can you hear the sirens moan?
White cane lying in a gutter in the lane,
    If you're walking home alone.

Don't let it bring you down
    It's only castles burning,
    Just find someone who's turning
    And you will come around.
Don't let it bring you down
    It's only castles burning,
    Just find someone who's turning
    And you will come around.

i was gona post 'through the barricades' by spandau ballet, but corvin beat me to it. so the only other one i could think of was...

    Imagine
    Imagine there's no heaven,
    It's easy if you try,
    No hell below us,
    Above us only sky,
    Imagine all the people
    living for today...

    Imagine there's no countries,
    It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
    No religion too,
    Imagine all the people
    living life in peace...

    Imagine no possesions,
    I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
    A brotherhood of man,
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,
but Im not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

I Lost the Right to Sing the Blues © 2000 Karen Drucker/John Hoy/Rita Abrams

I woke up this mornin? -- and somethin? was not right
My poor head was a-throbbin? -- cause I tossed and turned all night
This unfamiliar feelin? it shook me up inside
The truth it was revealin? -- that part of me had died
So I called my higher self -- and she gave me the bad news
She said ?Your life is just too good -- you lost the right to sing the blues!?

That broken down old Chevy -- that was eatin? me alive
I visualized a Lexus -- and now it?s sitting in my drive
And that man of mine -- that scoundrel that rotten low down bum
    I?ve transformed him into a love-God -- with a sizable trust fund
Everywhere I looked -- I was confronted with the clues
My life was just so good ?- I lost the right to sing the blues?

You can sing the blues ?- if you can?t pay the rent
And you can sing the blues -- if all your money?s been spent
But how can I sing the blues -- I ain?t got no excuse
when I?m driving my Porsche -- on the way to my masseuse?

So you won?t find me wailing late at night -- in some smokey bar
And you won?t see me cryin? tears into my old guitar
I?m too busy cleaning my charkas -- and chasing bad karma
And fluffing up my aura -? well that could take all day
Now that I?m enlightened ?- I gotta spread the news
When life gets this darn good -- you?ve lost the right to sing the blues?

You can sing the blues -- when your best friend puts you down
You can sing the blues -- if your man has done left town
But what gives me the right to sing that mournful tune
When I?m steamin? with my honey -- in my sauna in Cancun?

So now you?ve heard my story -- and you understand the pain
Of searching and not finding -- any reason to complain
'Cause my stars are in alignment -? my house is all feng shui-ed
I?m filled with peace and harmony -? my bills have all been paid
I?ve let go of the struggle ? you know I?ve paid my dues
When life is this darn good -- I?ve lost the right to sing the blues?

    hehehe!!!

PleasureDome, Imagine is a song I agreed with before it was ever written. Later, I thought the JWs wanted a world like the one in Imagine. But it always troubled me that they wanted it basically for themselves excluding anyone who did not want to listen to their message and give into their control. Glad I know better now.

Estee, I know people like that, their lives are good but they complain. I do have many reasons to sing the blues but I don't. I look at mostly the blessings. Counting blessings is a very healthy thing to do.

Hey French, glad you joined John Lennon.

    Modest Mouse - Float On

I backed my car into a cop car the other day
Well he just drove off sometimes life¹s ok
I ran my mouth off a bit too much, oh what did I say?
Well you just laughed it off, it was all OK
And we'll all float on OK
And we'll all float on OK
And we'll all float on OK
And we'll all float on anyway.
Well, a fake Jamaican took every last dime with that scam
It was worth it just to learn some sleight of hand
Bad news comes don't you worry even when it lands
Good news will work its way to all them plans
We both got fired on sadly the same day, that we were going to quit it anyways
And we¹ll all float on OK.
And we'll all float on OK
And we'll all float on OK
And we'll all float on OK
    And we'll all float on
Alright already, we'll all float on
No don't you worry we'll all float on
Alright I¹m ready. We'll all float on
Alright don't worry we'll all float on
Alright, alright, we¹ll all float on.
Alright already, we¹ll all float on OK.
Don¹t worry, we¹ll all float on.
Even if things get heavy, we¹ll all float on.
Alright already, we¹ll all float on alright.
Don¹t you worry, we¹ll all float on.
    We¹ll all float on.

    Bright Side of Life

Always look on the bright side of life.
    [whistling]
Always look on the light side of life.
    [whistling]

    If life seems jolly rotten,
    There's something you've forgotten,
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing.
When you're feeling in the dumps,
    Don't be silly chumps.
Just purse your lips and whistle. That's the thing.
    And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
    [whistling]
Always look on the right side of life,
    [whistling]

    For life is quite absurd
    And death's the final word.
You must always face the curtain with a bow.
    Forget about your sin.
    Give the audience a grin.
Enjoy it. It's your last chance, anyhow.
    So,...

Always look on the bright side of death,
    [whistling]
Just before you draw your terminal breath.
    [whistling]

    Life's a piece of shit,
    When you look at it.
    Life's a laugh and death's a joke. It's true.
    You'll see it's all a show.
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you.
    And...

Always look on the bright side of life.
    [whistling]
Always look on the right side of life.
    [whistling]
Always look on the bright side of life!
    [whistling]
Always look on the bright side of life!
    [whistling]
Always look on the bright side of life!
    [whistling]
Always look on the bright side of life!
    [whistling]
Always look on the bright side of life!
    [whistling]
Always look on the bright side of life!
    [whistling]
Always look on the bright side of life!
    [whistling]
Always look on the bright side of life!

    Goodnight Saigon Lyrics

    by Billy Joel

     We met as soul mates
    On Parris Island
    We left as inmates
    From an asylum
    And we were sharp
    As sharp as knives
And we were so gung ho
    To lay down our lives

    We came in spastic
    Like tameless horses
    We left in plastic
    As numbered corpses
    And we learned fast
    To travel light
    Our arms were heavy
    But our bellies were tight

    We had no home front
    We had no soft soap
    They sent us Playboy
    They gave us Bob Hope
    We dug in deep
    And shot on sight
    And prayed to Jesus Christ
    With all of our might

    We had no cameras
    To shoot the landscape
    We passed the hash pipe
    And played our Doors tapes
    And it was dark
    So dark at night
And we held on to each other
    Like brother to brother
We promised our mothers we'd write
And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Yes we would all go down together

    Remember Charlie
    Remember Baker
    They left their childhood
    On every acre
    And who was wrong?
    And who was right?
It didn't matter in the thick of the fight

    We held the day
    In the palm
    Of our hand
    They ruled the night
    And the night
Seemed to last as long as six weeks
    On Parris Island

    We held the coastline
    They held the highlands
    And they were sharp
    As sharp as knives
They heard the hum of our motors
    They counted the rotors
And waited for us to arrive
And we would all go down together
We said we'd all go down together
Yes we would all go down together

OOORAH We love this song ......a DI at Parris Island use to play this for the boys at night.......

    We are scanning the scene
    In the city tonight
    We are looking for you
    To start up a fight
    There is an evil feeling
    In our brains
    But it is nothing new
You know it drives us insane

    Running,
    On our way
    Hiding,
    You will pay
    Dying,
    One thousand deaths
    Running,
    On our way
    Hiding,
    You will pay
    Dying,
    One thousand deaths
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy

    There is no escape
    And that is for sure
This is the end we won?t take any more
    Say goodbye
To the world you live in
    You have always been taking
    But now you?re giving

    Running,
    On our way
    Hiding,
    You will pay
    Dying,
    One thousand deaths
    Running,
    On our way
    Hiding,
    You will pay
    Dying,
    One thousand deaths
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy

    Our brains are on fire
    With the feeling to kill
And it will not go away
    Until our dreams are fulfilled
    There is only one thing
    On our minds
    Don?t try running away
`cause you?re the one we will find

    Running,
    On our way
    Hiding,
    You will pay
    Dying,
    One thousand deaths
    Running,
    On our way
    Hiding,
    You will pay
    Dying,
    One thousand deaths
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy
    Searching,
    Seek and destroy

Hmmmm any black sabbath song really.....
