    And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won
The trench is dug within our hearts
    And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
    Torn apart

Micheal, I love U2. This song is a favorite of mine. This excerpt makes me think of JWs, exJWs... I thought U2 and R.E.M. the best of the 80s. I felt that they went against the status quo and yuppiedom to stand for the helpless and the underdog. I also love U2's song: Pride.

This is very true Flying, U2 totally discovered a sound that remains timeless. I think one of the reasons for this is that they refuse to be identified with boy meets girl lovley dovey lyrics. It's their meaninful lyrics and original sound that make them in my opinion the best band ever.

I would have to say this lovely little number by Love from 'Forever changes'

    THE DAILY PLANET

In the morning we arise and

start the day the same old way

as yesterday the day before and

all in all it's just a day like

all the rest so do your best with

chewing gum and it is oh so

    repetitious

    waiting on the sun

    Down on go-stop boulevard it

never fails to bring me down

the sirens and the accidents and

for a laugh there's plastic Nancy

She's real fancy with her children

    They'll go far, she

    buys them toys to

    keep in practice

    waiting on the war

I feel shivers in my spine

when the iceman, yes his ice is melting

    won't be there on time

    hope finds a rhyme

    for his little mind

A great song about recent events....

    Succexy

    by Metric (2003)

    Lonesome for no one when
    the room was empty and
war as we knew it was obsolete
    Nothing could beat complete denial

All we do is talk, sit, switch screens
    as the homeland plans enemies

All we do is talk, static split screens
    As the homeland plans enemies

    Invasion?s so succexxy

    Let?s drink to the military
    The glass is empty
Faces to fill and cars to feed
    Nothing could beat complete denial

All we do is talk, sit, switch screens
    As the homeland plans enemies

All we do is talk, static split screens
    As the homeland plans enemies

    Invasion's so succexxy

    passive attraction, programmed reaction
    passive attraction, programmed reaction
    action distraction, more information
flesh saturation, lips on a napkin
    ass ass ass

    where does the time go?
    we?re waking up so slowly
    days are horizontal lately
out of body, watched from above
out of body, watched from above

    passive attraction, programmed reaction
    more information, cash masturbation
follow the pattern- the hemlines, the headlines
    action distraction,faster than fashion
    faster than fashion,faster than fashion

    Lonesome for no one when
    the room was empty and
war as we knew it was obsolete
    Nothing could beat denial

The song "I.O.U." from the same album (2003) also has this great verse:

    Every ten year-old enemy soldier
Thinks falling bombs are shooting stars sometimes
But she doesn?t make wishes on them
When she wishes, she wishes for less ways to wish for
More ways to work toward it
    Ten year-old enemy soldier
Our falling bombs are her shooting stars

THROUGH THE BARRICADES by Gary Kemp

Mother doesn't know where love has gone
She says it must be youth
    That keeps us feeeling strong
See it in her face, that's turned to ice
And when she smiles she shows
    The lines of sacrifice
And now I know what they're saying
When the sun begins to fade
And we made our love on wasteland
    And through the barricades

    Father made my history
He fought for what he thought
    Would set us somehow free
He tought me what to say in school
    I learned off by heart
But now that's torn in two
And now I know what they're saying
In the music of the parade
We made our love on wasteland
    And through the barricades

Born on different sides of life
    We feel the same
And feel all of this strife
So come to me when I'm asleep
    We'll cross the line
    And dance upon the street
And now I know what they're saying
When the drums begin to fade
We made our love on wasteland
    And through the barricades

Oh, turn around and I'll be there
There's a scar through my heart
    But I'll bare it again
I thought we were the human race
But we were just another border-line-case
And the stars reach down and tell us
    That there's always one escape

I don't know where love has gone
    And in this trouble land
    Desperation keep us strong
Fridays child is full of soul
    With nothing left to lose
    There's everything to go
And now I know what they're are saying
    It's a terrible beauty we've made
So we make our love on wasteland
    And through the barricades

Now I know what they're are saying
as hearts go to their graves
we made our love on wasteland
    And through the barricades.

    Wish You Were Here

    Wish you were here

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
    blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change? And did you exchange
a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl,
    year after year,
running over the same old ground. What have we found?
    The same old fears,
    wish you were here.

Good post idea Flyinghighnow. The recent arguments about Linda Ronstadt are just bizzare really, when you think about music and musicians long history of tackling the subject of war.

You can be sure no one booed (and this is in Ft Worth TX) when John Prine dusted off his old anti-faux nationalism song "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore" at a recent concert.

Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore
    © John Prine

    While digesting Reader's Digest
In the back of a dirty book store,
A plastic flag, with gum on the back,
    Fell out on the floor.
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside
Slapped it on my window shield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross
I'd tell her how good I feel.

    Chorus:
But your flag decal won't get you
    Into Heaven any more.
    They're already overcrowded
    From your dirty little war.
    Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
    Into Heaven any more.

Well, I went to the bank this morning
And the cashier he said to me,
"If you join the Christmas club
We'll give you ten of them flags for free."
    Well, I didn't mess around a bit
I took him up on what he said.
And I stuck them stickers all over my car
And one on my wife's forehead.

    Repeat Chorus:

Well, I got my window shield so filled
    With flags I couldn't see.
So, I ran the car upside a curb
    And right into a tree.
By the time they got a doctor down
    I was already dead.
And I'll never understand why the man
Standing in the Pearly Gates said...

"But your flag decal won't get you
    Into Heaven any more.
    We're already overcrowded
    From your dirty little war.
    Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
    Into Heaven any more."

An original (sung in a choppy simple cadence)

Simon and Yeru, sittin' by the sea

Simon and Yeru, takin' a pee

    Simon and Yeru, talkin' politics

    Givin' each other, verbal kicks

    ~

Can't see the others, point of view

Don't know what, they're gonna do

Has become more, than just a game

Because it's clear, they've become the same

    ~

    (refrain)
SIMON AND YERU, ARE JUST ONE

SIMON AND YERU, ARE JUST ONE

SIMON AND YERU, ARE JUST ONE

We hope they keep postin', because it's fun!

    ~

They think that the other, never will be

as smart them, but they can't see

They are the same person - as in the moo-vee

    Paramount Pictures, IDENITY!

    ~

SIMON AND YERU, ARE JUST ONE

SIMON AND YERU, ARE JUST ONE
