I like to think, Scooby, that being a good witness means speaking about what we personally have seen or heard. I think of Jesus' conversation with the woman at the well, a friendly back-and-forth discussion, while going about their daily chores, had more meaning and impact. What affected the woman more was that Jesus understood her. This means a more intense involvement with ordinary people than a magazine sales pitch.

Jesus actually reached people's hearts. JW's can't.

Of course JGNAT, this was a way that Jesus used to reach peoples hearts and minds, by using illustrations and analogies. It was used as a teaching aid to help people get the "sense" of the real message he was preaching, and that was of the coming Kingdom. Don't u think?

Listening, scoob. I am talking about listening. Not talking.

Jesus used viewpoint questions which implies he was prepared to listen. Just because people talk doesn't mean they listen and people who listen many not have much to say. Few JWs take the time to listen especially if the householder does not follow the "script" and says something they aren't prepared for. Matthew 17:25 25 He said: "Yes." However, when he entered the house Jesus got ahead of him by saying: "What do you think, Simon?
Matthew 18:12 12 "What do YOU think? If a certain man comes to have a hundred sheep and one of them gets strayed...
Matthew 21:28 28 "What do YOU think? A man had two children...
Matthew 22:17 17 Tell us, therefore, What do you think? Is it lawful to pay head tax to Caesar or not?"
Matthew 22:41-42 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together Jesus asked them: 42 "What do YOU think about the Christ? Whose son is he?"

Listening....Talking ......Listening.......Talking... aren't the best results often achieved by a combination of both?

we only have a pattern to follow from history.
Scoob
Dont make the mistake of confusing what people reportedly said and did in the bible as History.
Just look at todays situation, the Jessika Lynch story for example, even with our world wide reporting techniques, and instant information, we dont REALLY know what happened, what was said and done, and that was only months ago, so how can we be expected to know what people REALLY said and did thousands of years ago?

Scooby,
I am glad you still post here, unlike some who have posted as pro-JW, you at least calmly bring your side to the table. Back to an earlier post, you said something about compairing Jesus' work to the JW's work. I believe you are only partly right. According to the Gospels, Jesus did go to the people with the message, but where did he go? Did he go and knock on doors of empty houses? No. Did he cover territory with as few as possible houses and grudgingly cover territory with greater populations? No. Jesus went to where the people was, namely to the local water wells, temples, and market places. I found out very quickly that a great many JWs have gotten to the point they would rather accomplish as little as possible in their ministry.
In short, I don't doubt their love for Jehovah. I just believe they only do the door-to-door work because they are forced into it by guilt put upon them by the Watchtower Society.

Well, I heard it often said at a public talk that we have one mouth and 2 ears which means we should listen twice as much as we talk.
Too many JWs go door-to-door with the supreme knowledge that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Hard to be much a listener with that viewpoint. Many JWs are afraid and hate the door to door work and so quickly get out their rehearsed sermon and barely listen to the response. New and long-time JWs do this. It is hard to be hopeful when three times a week you are told how evil non-JWs are and that they will all die soon to make the earth a Paradise.
After over 45 years in the JW "ministry" in many areas, having regular pioneered for much of that time, I know what the theory is taught at the KHs and what is actually practiced in the field.
A woman I called on once said there were 3 kind of JWs that came to her door
The Scared ones that quickly said their sermon and were gone...
The Righteous ones that talked but never listened...
The Love ones that showed love...and these she invited in.
She told me that I was the first one she had invited in in over 3 years (and this territory was worked every 6 weeks). I felt honored.
