I tried for about six months to toilet train my two cats. I would get them very close to being able to do it, but as soon as I started removing too much of the litter from the toilet rig, they would refuse to use it and instead use the floor.

My cat ignored it's litter box and instead shit in my shower. Imagine my surprise the next morning, at 4:00 AM, when I stepped into the shower and felt something creeping up between my toes.
The cat was evicted that same day.
