What Do You Think of Socialism?

  But talking about socialism as opposed to a social net is pointless because no one of any consequence is calling for socialism in the western world. A handful of people (too few) are calling for a social net and the opposition are erroneously labelling it as 'socialism' in order to trick the less informed (the majority, let's be honest) into being too scared to accept it. So what I am talking about is extremely pertinent.

  Socialism as a form of government is a historical curiosity at best in the western world.

  P.S. That's a very simplistic take on ghettos

  If you want to see lazy go to Baltimore, Detroit, Memphis, Saint Louis and other inner cities where the drug culture is high and people suck of the work of others.

  Well, living and, having been born in the United States of America, I do NOT live in what is considered to be socialism. BUT-----However----the older and older that I get, with each passing year---and I just turned 65 this past Sunday---the more and more that I LIKE---LIKE---the idea of Socialism---as a concept. I really do. You know, as a 65-year old, I kinda LIKE the idea of "free stuff". You see, I've been in the "work world", the "labor force, since I was 18 years old, while I was still in high school. (I started working for a JW, in---what else---the cleaning business, the janitorial business.) I've done many things since then, primarily clerical, general office work. But, right now---at the age of 65---I am just a liiiiiiiiiiitle bit burned out, worn out, from the freakin' work world. I really am. I've had to put up with soooo much crap in the work world. So, yeah, I kind of like the idea of Socialism. What's wrong with being-----well, "social"? So, OK, that's my take on the subject. Best Regards, all.

  I'm ha-haing at the moment. Why? Because understanding that the collective mind-set in the USA is anti-socialism, a results of the decades of propaganda in which the USA saw the Soviet Union as its big enemy.

  But aome time back I read an article (now lost in my jumbled files) describing how the US government party often used pork barreling as a way to win votes. If a certain congressional district was failing economically, this writer claimed that the government would often spend some money in that area via its ability to spend money on military projects. The writer called it, "Military Socialism."

  I've never gone into the 'truthiness' of that claim. Is it correct?

  Talking about socialism or any kind of social net with the majority of Americans is just impossible; it's like trying to talk about evolution with creationists.

  It's ironic that everyone (or at least the majority) here has managed to mentally free themselves from the mind control of the JW cult, but can't seem to manage the same with the American cult of anti-welfare.

  I wish to see a fair and egalitarian Society, with equal opportunity for all here in the U.K, and all over the World one day. I will not live to see it everywhere of course. Here in the U.K there are so many hurdles to get over to achieve even slight progress toward a fairer Society.

  We will have to get rid of our " First past the post" electoral system methinks, we will have to attack the strangle-hold that the " 1% " have over the spread of wealth, and we will have to change the mind set of so many Brits.

  A Labour Government, " For the Many not just the Few", will work toward some of these goals, if we get one, which, despite the awfulness and ineptitude of our present Government is not a foregone conclusion should we have a General Election in the near future.

  We can argue about what Socialism is, but what it is not, is something to be feared and rejected out of hand.

  Making sweeping generalisations about entire cities as an argument against the principle of a social safety net just makes you look like a sociopath.

  IMHO, the "sweeping generalization" noted above makes the poster look like someone who is "in the know" vs having his head in his @$$.
