Hi Minimus, can I suggest that you watch some of the Prager University videos on Socialism - https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=prager+university+socialism

MR. Prager, as we may expect from his talk, is described as a 'social conservative.' Much of what he says does describe the attitudes of people today.

But, is socialism the only reason people are like he describes? I am, of course, unsure as to whether Mr. Prager has discussed other aspects of politics as a cause for furthering human selfishness.?

For instance, what about western democracy? I live in Sydney and here in this year of 2019, we will have two elections. In the first, an election for the state government of NSW, both sides are busy promising the world to us voters. The governing party, if it loses, will lose plum ministerial salaries and the ability to reward tts supporters. Isn't that a form of selfishness? The opposition, of course, hopes to gain those rewards. So are they not also driven by selfishness? Both parties have had their share of bad governmental mistakes while in office, so I'm not sure if either group can promise good government.

And, in about 4 months we will have a National election. Already the promises of more money are flowing in key electorates, That WILL get worse as the election nears.

So if Prager is correct that socialism promotes selfishness, I can wonder what he thinks about democracy promoting selfishness?

    socialism makes people selfish

being selfish means only thinking of their own advantage

so in 2008 fannie mae and freddie mac

    Aig

    Bear stearns

and Lehmann brothers were very socialist then when they wanted the us public to give them BILLIONS Of $$$$$

Okay, I usually try to avoid this type of click bait. But here goes.

In 1961 America faced a mortal threat; calls for a national health insurance program known as MEDICARE. Today Republicans routinely accuse Dems of planning to cut the programs funding.

But the political strategy- claiming that any attempt to strengthen the social safety net will put us on the slippery slope to totalitariansim still lives on.

Medicare didn't destroy freedom. Scaremongering over socialism is both silly and dishonest. But it is politically effective. Which is why the OP is asking the question in the first place.

Still, voters overwhelming support the policies of American socialists. Including medicare for everyone and higher taxes on the wealthy. Which is why Trump in his state of the union message forgo the usual fearmongering about scary brown people and started warning about "socialism." As if Leon Trotsky were knocking at our door. Believe me, the commies are not coming to confiscate your pick-up trucks.

Hi Fulltimestudent, I'm also in Aus. and very aware of the political malaise, to distill it down, the type of people who seek to rule over us are also the type of people who are least suited to the task.

QUOTE: "Medicare didn't destroy freedom. Scaremongering over socialism is both silly and dishonest. But it is politically effective."

It's effective, because the voters usually lack cognitive skills

A recent cartoon on the topic:

Quote: "Which is why the OP is asking the question in the first place."

I thought he asked because Mr Trump included an attack on socialism in his State of the Union address.

Quote (from resolute Bandicoot ) "

Do you think that that type of person is likely to appeal most to the average voter?

BTW, In a system where an organisation (political party) provides a slate of candidates to the voters is more aptly described as oligarchic. (Look for the definition of an oligarchy)

With the exception of garbage pickup(private companies here), I find your list to be accurate.

Remember that The TOWN contracts them and it is paid for with our Tax Dollars.

I love taking advantage of the benefits but hate paying the taxes.

Human greed is the ruin of all management systems. Greedy employees ruin business by forming unions and increasing the cost of labor. Greedy employers and shareholders try to skim every ounce of profit from their employees causing them to burnout and quit ruining the business. Same in political systems.

Round and round it goes swinging politically from the right to the left and back again
