And who can forget " A Boy Named Sue "

My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue."

Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name.

Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Sue."

Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do!
    Now your gonna die!!"

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong."

He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you "Sue.'"

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I came away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Sue! I still hate that name!

Very sad on both accounts, I'm not normally a country music fan, but I did like Johnny Cash, his lyrics spoke to you, he was the man in black. John Ritter was very funny, and he will be missed, and hope the cast and crew of his new show can cope with this, I know the feeling you have when you lose a co-worker, I lost one about 3 months ago, just out of the blue, the guy ate right, exercised, and dropped for nor reason at 35, they think because of a virus, that attacked his heart. It can happen to anyone, so live life while you can.

It's sad, but like others have said, expected, that Cash would pass on soon after his wife died.

He was one of the great song writers of the story telling genre for our time.

And he was a recognized talent by even those outside of the 'country-western' style appreciated.

Myself and a few of my friends who all typically do not listen to 'c-w', loved Cash.

Ritter's passing was a shock. I never saw his new sitcom, but I was glad to see that his career was on the upswing. I feel bad for thinking this way, but now I feel like I should watch a couple episodes of his new sitcom just to see what I was missing.

    Winston.

Robdar, the lyrics you posted of 'Walk the Line' are really a beautiful reflection to read in light of him losing his eife so recently.

And xjw-b12, I love 'Boy named Sue'!

During one meeting we had an older brother incorporate two lines of lyrics from this song in his comments. I can't remeber what they were, but i remember thinking, "Man, I don't think many here get the reference. That's one hell of a song!"

"Folsom Prison" is another great song!

    Winston.

I don't listen to much country, but Johnny Cash transcends country music. I'll be listening to Johnny Cash all day today in remembrance of one of the greatest contributions to music ever. The sad thing is he still had talent to offer. His recent rendition of Hurt was even better than Trent Reznors' (in my opinion.)

    Faves:

    I've Been Everywhere

    Hurt

    I See A Darkness (w/ Will Oldham)

    San Quintin

    Folsom Prison Blues

    The Long Black Veil

    Nobody

    One (U2 Cover)

    Personal Jesus (DM cover)

    If I Were A Carpenter

    Ring Of Fire

    Cocaine & Whiskey

Don't Take Your Guns To Town

    Sunday Morning Sidewalk

And that song he did with Dave Matthews...

    R.I.P. Johnny Cash

BTW Amac, Hurt is also a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song.

I'm not a country fan either...but even I LOVED Johnny Cash! How could you not?

I am very sorry to hear he has passed away.

John Ritter--while I was never really a fan, it's still so shocking to hear he died so suddenly. When I saw the title of the other thread on this board I was just shocked and thought, it must be some other John Ritter. Very sad...I really feel for his loved ones.

You're right! I noted that in my comments with "even better than Trent Reznors' " but forgot to note it after the song title. I See A Darkness is also a cover of Will Oldham's version. Not sure of Nobody was a Cash original or not. Now Playing: Johnny Cash - Big Bad John

I kinda felt that John Ritter is maybe just a balancing thing that had to happen cuz of JC. lol, ok, that was mean. I do feel for his family with his relative youth and the suddenness of it.

NPR played JC and his family singing a cover of "we'll meet again" this morning. Magical.
