nicolaou, spot on observation. A common ancestry indeed. The Orthodox Jews have their private, religious courts. Then various "Christian" groups do: Roman Catholic and certain conservative Protestant sects like JWs, Amish, and others. Then the Moslems. They all have a common origin in the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible.

The Muslim Arbitration Tribunal is a form of alternative dispute resolution which operates under the Arbitration Act 1996 which is available in England. It is one of a range of services (Islamic Sharia Council is another) for Muslims who wish to resolve disputes without recourse to the courts system.[2] According to Machteld Zee, the MAT differs from other Sharia councils in that their ‘core business’ is arbitrating commercial disputes under the Arbitration Act 1996.[3]

The tribunals were set up by lawyer Faiz-ul-Aqtab Siddiqi and operate in London, Bradford, Manchester, Birmingham and Nuneaton. Two more were originally planned for Glasgow and Edinburgh.[4] Rulings can be enforced in England and Wales by both the County Courts and the High Court. The media have described a system of Islamic Sharia courts which have the power to rule in civil cases.[4][dead link] As of 2008, the courts had dealt with around 100 cases dealing with issues such as inheritance and nuisance neighbours..

The MAT operates under Section 1 of the Arbitration Act which states that: “the parties should be free to agree how their disputes are resolved, subject only to such safeguards as are necessary in the public interest”.[5] As such it operates within the framework of English law and does not constitute a separate Islamic legal system. Under the Act they are deemed to be "arbitration tribunals".[4][dead link]

The Muslim Arbitration Tribunal has no powers to grant a divorce which is valid in English and Welsh law.[5][6] A talaq can be granted to recognise divorce.[5][6] A sharia marriage has no bearing on personal status under UK law.[7] The Muslim Arbitration Tribunal has no jurisdiction on criminal matters but can attempt reconciliation between spouses.

Take some time to listen to Professor Jordan Peterson on YouTube. You will gain a well-rounded, logical, fact-based understanding of extreme ideologies and the dangers they pose.

what ‘worst excesses’ of Islam are western governments not clamping down on exactly? - ok ...

The Sharia issue (not the small courts that resolve marriage and inheritance matters between Muslims but 'Sharia creep' - the push for Sharia to supersede UK law)

    Polygamy

    FGM

    Cousin marriage

    Violence to 'apostates'

    Terrorism

Extreme imams, particularly in the prison system

    Oh. Peterson.

What would you advocate? Banning Islam? Deporting any Muslim from the UK? Rounding them up and putting them in camps? You seem to have so much anger for something that does not affect you at all.

You're pathetic when it comes to debating - you rely too much on misrepresenting what other people have said. You will be unable to point to those things because I never said them. If you are not going to discuss things properly then there's no point allowing you to take part.

We should definitely stop importing Islamists and make sure that the laws are applied to those already here, not excusing their behavior or turning a blind eye for fear of accusations of racism or islamophobia.

FGM, honor killings, mass abuse of children and women, that's before you get to the coverup and protection of 'regular' criminals.

    Oh. Peterson.

And your point is? Read what the shirt says - are you "for" any of those things?

If not, they you are by definition, an Islamophobe as well because that is Islam.

If you are for them, then you are a pitiful sack of shit and not welcome here.

Geez, Simon, why all the hate?

Hateful words, hateful names and well...just hateful.

Peterson's book is no longer available in New Zealand.

    Figure it out.

    Figure it out.

Having read his book and heard him speak, there's NOTHING that warrant banning it and certainly nothing that warrants trying to associate it as somehow responsible for the shooting. It's a complete over-reaction and is intended to fool the gullible into thinking he is somehow some alt-right extremist who must be ignored when all he does is advocate personal responsibility and good behavior. It's politicians and the left taking advantage of a tragedy to silence people they don't like.

Maybe the gunman wouldn't have decided to go on a killing spree if he'd bothered to read that book.

But as we're going down this route, I'm glad you support the Quran being banned - because so so many killers seem to read and draw inspiration from that don't they?
