No. Just a handgun. It's not like her husband is going to come to hurt her with 20 of his friends. The threat is usually one or two people. So there's no need for semi-automatics.

No. Because it doesn't offer the protection you imagine it does and comes with a whole heap of risks that you'll want to gloss over: it could be taken and used against her, stolen and used against others or found and used by a child. The latter seems to happen frequently, the "woman buys gun and shoots husband who threatened to kill her and was coming to get her"? not so much ... At the very least, the chance of her having it immediately to hand is unlikely. She'd be better investing the money in changing the locks.

If someone has made a threat then normally that's enough to get the authorities involved and get a court order or even an arrest if it's a credible threat.

How will her gun help if her crazy murder obsessed husband also has one? Will she shoot the bullets as they fly toward her?

Guns are an extremely poor defensive weapon (and why they are such a problem).

Let's put the question a different way: Should a man be able to easily buy a semi-automatic pistol so it's easy for him to murder the ex-wife that recently divorced him? Why or why not?
