Supreme Court tells Jehovah's Witness charity it cannot stop inquiry

12 August 2016 by Rebecca Cooney, Be the First to Comment

The court's ruling puts an end to attempts by the Watch Tower and Bible Tract Society of Great Britain to block an investigation into how it handles child abuse allegations

The Supreme Court has issued a final ruling telling the Watch Tower and Bible Tract Society of Great Britain that it cannot stop the Charity Commission from opening a statutory inquiry into the charity.

The Supreme Court represented the last chance for the Jehovah’s Witness charity to prevent the Charity Commission from investigating how it handles allegation of child abuse after the Court of Appeal also ruled in March that it could not appeal against the opening of an inquiry.

The commission opened a statutory inquiry in May 2014 to examine WTBTSB’s safeguarding measures after a congregation member and child abuse survivor alleged the charity had not done enough to protect her from her abuser, who was also a member of the church.

The Supreme Court ruling, handed down on 11 July, means WTBTSB cannot take its challenge any further within the British courts.

Chris Willis Pickup, head of litigation at the commission, welcomed the ruling. "Following two years of legal proceedings in five different courts and tribunals, the Supreme Court has finally brought Watch Tower’s challenge to our inquiry decision to an end," he said.

"In the two years since we opened our inquiry, we have received a number of statements and helpful evidence from variety of sources, but limited information from Watch Tower.

The WT's sneering boast about how "no weapon formed against you will succeed" (Isaiah 54:17) appears ready to crumble into dust.

    About time!

Reminds me of another scripture, Luke 8:17:

For there is nothing hidden that will not become manifest, nor anything carefully concealed that will never become known and not come out in the open.

    Hey AndersonsInfo!

This is basically the same as the Guardian article that's already been posted about nine hours ago? yeah?

    https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/5481514754113536/borg-fighting-tooth-nail-turn-over-sex-abuse-records-press-taking-note

Perhaps you could have pointed out any addition information the article you posted contained to those already posted - I would have found that helpful and informative

The problem is nowadays, if you do a related post and split the threads all up into small ones, they'll lose their 'hotness' factor so in reality, rather than benefiting the topic of discussion, you're doing the topic a disservice

Thanks for posting this article, Barbara

sir82: Perhaps you could have pointed out any addition information the article you posted contained to those already posted - I would have found that helpful and informative

It is helpful. It is the source and viewpoint that is critical (as Barbara pointed out). It reports on the issue from the viewpoint of the third sector - the world of the non-profits

I find it interesting that this article identifies the JW organization as a 'charity' rather than a 'religion', which is the usual label attached to them when they are in the news.

The WTS has relentlessly pursued whatever avenue of tax category they could over the years, transforming themselves from 'business' status in the pre-war days, to a 'religious' status in the post-war days, and then, the recent jump onto the non-profit bandwagon. They have taken advantage of every tax break they could, changing structurally and doctrinally wherever and whenever the $$$ wind$ in tax regulations suited them

Now, it bites them in the a$$. Along with the nice tax breaks that a corporation gets once they decide to enter into the non-profit sector and qualify as a 'charity', comes the inevitable scrutiny that is attached to that tax exemption privilege

And the WTS doesn't like it one little bit.

It is time to pay the price, Watchtower. For all those years of $$$ privilege that you have enjoyed. Show us what you have. Show us who you are. The public wants to know. It is our right to know

You are becoming a touch on the annoying side.It seems you have the need to post on threads where information may have been discussed on another posting and lecturing the OP as to how it can be handled correctly. We are lucky the correct and only way seems to be your way.

Maybe you should START your own post and outline your concerns there.
