New anti-spam measures

  We've been bombarded by spam a number of times in the last few weeks and last night was the worst yet. I already built some tools to make removing it easier because I think the longer it stays up, the more it encourages it, but still it's annoying to see and interferes with the operation of the site. Fortunately, we were able to catch and remove it relatively quickly.

  I've now implemented and deployed some additional protection measures which I hope will better detect and block it from appearing in the first place. There's always a chance that regular posts will be impacted though so if you do have any issues replying or starting topics please PM me so I can look into it.

  Also, as it's impossible to have a 100% guaranteed system, there is always a chance that some will still get through so please do your bit to help by not commenting on the spam or starting new topics about it as that just becomes something else to clean up. Just ignore it, flag one or two if you can or PM me with a link to it (that helps alert us, especially if it's within an existing topic).

  Every time I look at the site now and there isn't spam I think "yay me, it works !!"

  ... in the same way that there are no Lions due to my patent-pending Lion-repellent body spray.

  What I'm trying to say is ... maybe hold off on the thanks until we find out if it works or not :)

  Not that he needs it necessarily but in Simon's defense there is no application that is impervious to exploits. Give the time and circumstance it's always possible. Hence it is always a constant battle. No magic wand is the point.

  How long have you been using Google's captacha? I love that thing btw.

  I thought it was OK if you double-clicked on it quickly?

  So far it seems to be working. They've been back and posted more of their crap but it's staying off the site.

  I have lots more layers of protection to add if I need to.

  Its the first time I have ever noticed a spam problem Simon that I can remember , and I have been here about 9 years , so you must be doing something right .

  I must admit it did give me a scare , was it my pc infected ? or were you the target .
