Of course it's voluntary. Going to the meetings is voluntary. Going on the ministry is voluntary. Being a witness is voluntary. i chose not to do any of that.

COBE: "Brother Caleb, are you sure you didn't talk about Jehovah for at least 15 minutes last month? While you think about that, I'm going to pencil you in for 15 minutes. If that's not right, just give me a call later, OK?"

(yes... this actually happened... several times during 2009)

As our COBE commented during a WT study meeting.
"Not turning in your service time is worse than watching extreme pornography."

Not just 'pornography' but "extreme pornography". Sounds like your 'COBE' is trying to minimize the seriousness of something by saying failing to report is 'worse'.

When I was baptized on January 30, 1971 the 'organizational manual' at the time was YOUR WORD IS A LAMP TO MY FOOT. On page 103 under the chapter title, REPORTING YOUR FIELD MINISTRY, is printed the following: "So we request that all of Jehovah's witnesses make weekly reports to their congregation of what they have done by way of preaching the good news to others." I see no statement here indicating the voluntary reporting of time, such as: 'If you wish you may turn in time.........' or 'sometimes, some of Jehovah's witness turn in time to the Overseers........'. It seems pretty cut and dry to me. If you want to be considered one of Jehovah's Witnesses you WILL turn in a field service report because that is what is REQUIRED by the leaders of the Jehovah's Witnesses religion.

TOMO gave his comments about inactive ones at last year's AGM, I believe. I have the transcripts somewhere. If you want the full flavor of his comments, there is a video floating around as well. I think Cedars covered the "inactive" comments on his blog.

TOMOS exact words carried the thought of "inactive" = Dead at the Big A.

He probably speaks from lots of experience.

Each and every baptismal candidate who decides he/she wants to officially join the JWs sits down with two elders prior to baptism and goes over 100+ questions. If he/she answers 99 questions correct pertaining to all other aspects of being a JW but answers in a negative way to questions regarding his/her view toward the field ministry and a negative view towards turning in his/her 'voluntary' field service report he/she will not qualify for baptism.

Once a JW, the individual is hounded, pursued and reminded month after month about his/her 'voluntary' requirement of reporting.

Voluntarism with a lot of pressure and guilt implied at every meeting.

Actually the WTS modelled this turning in reported time by using Jesus's example when he told his faithful apostles to turn in their time preaching on a monthly basis..

The Watchtower Publishing house never goes beyond what is written.

Sure, it's "voluntary" in the same sense that paying your taxes is "voluntary".

You won't die on April 16 if you don't file....although you might eventually wish you had.

Pretty much the same thing with JW field serve-us reports.
