Phenomenal Woman

Free-roaming evening last night. Went to the grocery store so there would be milk and coffee for my morning latte. Passing on the sidewalk, got caught in a vortex and pulled into Barnes & Noble. Looked through the P.G. Wodehouse, hoping to introduce Nickie to his delicious humor, but they didn't have the one I wanted; Jeeves was present in abundance, but I was after a bottle of Buck-U-Uppo and some naughty cats climbing through a window.

Wandering in the maze of shelves, I turned a corner and was suddenly in the poetry section. There, I met a woman named Maya Angelou; and in her eyes I caught a glimpse of the woman of my dreams.

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
    They think I'm telling lies.
    I say,
It's in the reach of my arms,
    The span of my hips,
    The stride of my step,
    The curl of my lips.
    I'm a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
    And to a man,
    The fellows stand or
    Fall down to their knees.
    Then they swarm around me,
    A hive of honey bees.
    I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
    The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
    I'm a woman,
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    Men themselves have wondered
    What they see in me.
    They try so much
    but they can't touch
    My inner mystery.
When I try to show them,
They say they still can't see.
    I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
    The sun of my smile,
    The ride of my breasts,
    The grace of my style.
    I'm a woman,
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

    Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
    When you see me passing,
It ought to make you proud.
    I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
    The bend of my hair,
    The palm of my hand,
    The need for my care.
    'Cause I'm a woman
    Phenomenally.
    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.

Maya IS a phenomenal woman. If you read any of her books, you will be enriched.

It’s unfortunate the moderately influential compilation “written” by Jehovah isn’t as conciliatory.

It’s a good thing Barnes and Nobel is around to help us understand the mess we were left with.

    Comf,

    Refreshing, soothing, beautifuly said.
Is there anything more delightful than the sight of a
woman who appeals. Poetry in motion - life in flow.
Nothing captures and expands the joy of living more.

    Hi Cap'n

I love maya's work! The women is powerful and a genius.
Have you ever read her autobiographical novel,"I know why the caged bird sings"? It has to do with incest.
The censors are alive and kicking, this book is constantly 'challenged' for profanity and pornographic' language....and some groups restrict access to her work......shame shame shame on them(religious right wingers yanno) Thanks for the phenomenal post! hugs,T

Carl Sagan on balancing openness to new ideas with skeptical scrutiny...."if you are open to the point of gullibility and have not an ounce of skeptical sense, you cannot distinguish useful ideas from worthless ones."

Barnes and Noble is my home away from home. Why go to a library when you can read in a love couch for free and drink a mocha?

Its a clever strategy, though, cause I have never purchased more books before.

Enamored with retiring in Mexico, I purchased all twenty-seven books on Mexico. Never would have happened in a prim and proper, old-fashioned ("May I help you?"} book store.

What caught my attention was her confidence, and her delight in being herself. Once, a long time ago, some company had a brief ad campaign which featured a full-figured woman (this was in the days before "Just My Size"). The copy said, "She just smiles when people tell her fuller figures are back in style. She knows they never left." Oh, my, yes... I don't know whether such self-confidence competes with physical attraction or works in tandem with it, but whichever it is, it sure gets me going.

She knows she doesn't have to be. She knows her worth just as she is. Look at her! Look at her face

It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,

Watch her walk! She knows what a woman she is. No suppressing of sexuality here:

    The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.

Look at her posture, her radiance, the way she carries herself!

It's in the arch of my back,
    The sun of my smile,
    The ride of my breasts,
    The grace of my style.

Is it any wonder that the men she passes are at her feet?

And notice who it is who praises her. Is this a male indulgence of madonna syndrome? Is this the idealized woman of twilight flights of fancy? No! There is no baritone in this hymn of praise. It's her own lovely feminine voice declaring it:

    Phenomenal woman,
    That's me.
    Halleluhah, sister.

    COMF, my hero!

It's so sad that young girls get the idea from the media, that the thinner you are, the better.

Real beauty comes from within - either you have it, or you don't!
