The spirit of Mandela himself hovers over every stick and stone on the place and I wondered what had sustained him in such a bleak period of his life. Was it the justness of his cause, the solidarity of his comrades, or a strong sense of destiny - or a combination of all three?
While on holiday I was also reading his riveting biography "Long Walk to Freedom" in which he recounts the strong influence of the Methodist Church on his early life. Yet his first wife Evelyn and he separated partly because she was a devout Jehovah's Witness, whereas he felt that the struggle for emancipation was mainly, if not primarily, a political issue
