Do video games cause bad behaviour in children?

Kaik, I love my collection of comic books, from my youth, and it was an interesting comparison.

Just from personal experience. My two sons and sometimes my daughters have played and still play, video games. They started when they were very young, under ten. Now that they are grown they have a big collection of games. My eldest son who is 25 played them at his job as a games tester working at Sony.

I don't think the games have made any of my children violent. They have spent many happy hours with each other and their friends in my house playing games. They are all lovely, caring children, including their friends.

The only thing is as others have commented on. They were obsessed so much with the games they rarely played out and are not interested in sport. Although now they are grown up they go to the gym.

My opinion is that the demonizing of video games was borne out of ultra-conservatism and ultra-conservatism seldom has roots in reality. They are people who have their emotional processes affronted and over react accordingly.

Video games can't make you a violent person any more than pornography can make someone comitt rape. These psychological flaws are already seeded and a demonstated propensity for violent games or pornography at most may only serve to make these flaws evident.

Combat veterans who are sometimes exposed to real violence for months at a time don't return home with the idea that's it's okay to kill people, they are able to make the distinction between the circumstances of peace time and war time.

I grew up with Zulus with whom it is customary to stick fight to prove bravery and settle disputes. Never did this suggest to any of us that it was okay to run around hitting people with sticks whenever we felt like it.

They tried to lay partial blame on video games for the Columbine massacre but psychologists have long since agreed that Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold would very likely have comitted atrocities in the absence of video games. Certainly people have done so without ever having picked up a control or watched a violent movie.

I believe ultra-conservatism has contributed and will contribute to more violence through propaganda and doctrine than any video game ever has or will.

You are referring to games like Pokemon, which is rated E10. The game has no coarse language, non-graphic fantasy violence, and no innuendo of sex or drugs. You get moves like "psychic", and there is a "fighting" and "psychic" type of Pokemon. Even there, there is no reference to magic that I could see within this game.

What the washtowel is worried about, and what many parents are obsessed with, is that Pokemon can take children away from field circus. How dreary would things be if, instead of going in field circus, the children are playing Pokemon? Or, suppose you let them bring their Nintendo 3DS with their Pokemon X and Y, or Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (or Black/White or whatever will fit in the system) and play during the boasting session? They would not be indoctrinated properly with damnation if, while they were doing so, the children were fighting Wattson, catching a Kyogre, or grinding their fennekin into something they could fight Viola (or, trading a Seviper for a Zangoose during the boasting session). The 3DS will let you do just that.

Not to mention, if children can't even enjoy an ice cream cone without being guilty, how much more they shouldn't enjoy a game of Pokemon?

WTWIZARD " you are referring to games like Pokemon...."

i guess I should clarify that point.I am referring to the advertisements for other games that come on line when my kid is playing Pokemon. These games I assume are not rated E10.

My Stepson has been playing Pokemon since he was about 15, he is now 25 year old and still plays it, he is obsessed by it, he even plays tournament that last all night.

He has grown to be a kind, very caring and very well adjusted adult.

If you are worried about bringing your child up to be well adjusted you just have to remember guidelines we all already know, e.g. our time, love, direction, society, friendship, family, education, self discipline, being a role model etc.

Then anything our children are faced with, they will be able to handle, because you are there with them.
