My first guess is that the lights are left on as a form of suicide watch, that and the fact that he's considered dangerous. THe food, TOUGH, if I went into jail saying I could eat only Tbone steak, I wouldn't get it. Even if it's a religious thing on the vegetables, if he's claiming to be Muslim then muslims are allowed to eat anything in order not to starve. If it's a "social conscience" thing...THOUGH SH*T! He's in jail, not the Ramada. I do agree though, let the kid read...letters from the families of the victims of the sniper, WHOEVER it is.

I dunno, is having something to read a right? And if they are meeting the basic dietery needs of a human, then they're not violating his rights.

We are innocent until proven guilty in this country folks - that thats not guilty by common opinion.
The guy is only charged with a crime and is therefore innocent. Even if (and when) he is convicted, he still has basic human rights.
This kid is only 17 years old. Although his alledged crimes are horrendous, he still has basic rights. He's being charged as an adult in a state that almost guarantees him a death penalty upon conviction. If he wants to read until then, I say his civil rights are being violated.
While I agree that a person is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, I agree with Dutchie. Malvo is being provided food, shelter, and medical care.. at no cost to him, but to the taxpayers. In my own opinion, my leniency only goes so far for someone accused of multiple homicide with so much evidence stacked against them. No physical harm should come to them prior to a conviction, but to cater to their every desire or whim is lunacy. He is being cared for while the wheels of justice turn (albeit slowly) in due process. That is all he can expect.
How about having a look at this article? I am not aware of all of the facts surrounding this case, but it appears that Malvo confessed to the crime.
http://www.msnbc.com/news/829175.asp?0sl=-32
Sources familiar with the session confirmed for NBC News many of the details first reported by the Post, saying that Malvo admitted that he fired the Bushmaster assault rifle in several of the sniper shootings, including the slaying of an FBI analyst on Oct. 14.
Malvo told investigators that he shot and killed Linda Franklin, an FBI computer analyst, as she was leaving a Home Depot in Fairfax County, Va., according to a law-enforcement official working on the case.
Malvo is facing first-degree murder charges in Franklins slaying, charges that could result in the death penalty upon conviction.
The official described Malvo as giggling and laughing during parts of the late-night interview session, and at other times looking more serious. Police officials taped several hours of the interrogation, which Fairfax County prosecutors will undoubtedly try to use against Malvo at trial.
On Wednesday, after a brief hearing for Muhammad, Greenspun blasted cowardly police sources who leaked details of Malvos interrogation. Now I realize that this is for now an allegation and hearsay, but if this information proves valid.. then civil rights go out the window in my book.
Just my 2c.

I dunno, but I think my moods might have a wide, abnormal range if I were constantly deprived of a good night's sleep and my body had to adjust to a new menu -- all at the same time. If the dude's guilty, though -- teen-ager or no teen-ager -- he deserves what he gets. Matter of fact, I say let's save us taxpayers some money and gas him right now. I just hope he's guilty.
Then too, I'm a little concerned about the path this country seems to be taking when it comes to the rights of citizens, but maybe that's a whole different issue, eh? My bad.
