Sniper suspect's request for better treatment denied Malvo lawyers say mattress thin, lights too bright; reading material denied

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) Jailed sniper suspect John Lee Malvo, whose lawyers claim is losing his right to privacy in prison, was denied a request for a court order requiring better treatment.

Juvenile Court Judge Charles Maxfield refused to grant the order Friday. Defence lawyers had claimed their 17-year-old client's mattress is too thin, he has been denied reading material, his cell lights glare 24 hours a day and he is being denied vegetarian meals.

"This is about the right to human dignity," lawyer Michael Arif told Maxfield.

A blood-thirsty hunter of humans is a VEGETARIAN??? Ahh the irony is so rich.

One can only imagine what the prison conditions would be like for this cold-blooded killer kid if he had committed such crimes in an Arab nation!

He should have thought about the human dignity of those he murdered. He didn't mind inconveniencing them at all. Now he has to pay the consequences of his bloody actions and he's screaming mistreatment. Anybody want to buy him a T.V.?

While I agree the "thin mattress" is a little weak, the others complaints imho are valid. We are innocent until proven guilty in this country folks - that thats not guilty by common opinion.

If he's a vegetarian - although I agree with Gophers first sentence - he should be allowed to maintain whatever diet he lives by. And also, not allowing a prisoner to read is wrong - simply wrong. This kid is only 17 years old. Although his alledged crimes are horrendous, he still has basic rights. He's being charged as an adult in a state that almost guarantees him a death penalty upon conviction. If he wants to read until then, I say his civil rights are being violated.

    I agree with you, pettygrudger.

The guy is only charged with a crime and is therefore innocent. Even if (and when) he is convicted, he still has basic human rights. Or so I thought.

The term "human rights" is not defined by the defendant He is being housed and fed. He is not sleeping on the floor. His human rights are being satisfied within the definition of the law. He can expect nothing else.

Technically, the piece of loaf is innocent until proven guilty, but they have goods on him. Off with his head.

I don't beleive the government should have to cater to the "dietary" needs of criminals. When the food tray is slid through the bars, he doesn't have to eat the meat. Give him seconds on the vegetable medley. Don't want the milk? Well, there's plenty of water.

Pieces of f*ck like this need to be done away with, and quick.
