I hate to be the Grinch here, but I HATE Christmas.

I suppose I have several reasons to attribute this emotion I express towards that time of year.

Growing up a Dub, I was never allowed to celebrate Christmas time, and I really had no friends to go out and associate with, and obviously we got no presents or parties. So yes, in that aspect, I am somewhat bitter that my childhood was taken from me.

Now I look at Christmas here in the United States and all I see is a massive marketing campaign for the almighty dollar. Jesus H Christ (and no I am not referring to the JW.com member who posts here ) they begin advertising Christmas garbage at Halloween!

Thousands of people go into debt every year buying presents on credit cards, and living in Chicago the weather is absolutely horrible at Christmas time because in our winters we get double digit snowfall and bitter below zero windchills.

Everything about Christmas I ABHOR, HATE, DESPISE (insert any proper synonym for the previous words)

That is just my opinion and personal experience.

Reborn a.k.a. Grinch - that was funny btw.

I think things may change when you have a family one day. You will remember what it was like to grow up without christmas...I remember waking up and looking out the window at all the other kids in the street wearing new roller skates (roller blades weren't invented then LOL) or riding new bikes (a dragster or a raleigh 20). I used to want to go next door to my friends house to play with her new barbie or to colour in her new colouring book. I know Christmas is terribly commercial now...that is true. But I won't deny my kids what I was denied.

When you do have your own family one day, you may feel differently...I tend to put my dislike of the commercial side of it behind me for the sake of my kids. Our first christmas (last year) they never got very expensive presents...in fact I didn't know what to do...even Andy had to help me decorate the tree because I was so new at it all. I even stuffed up because the kids knew what they were getting...and so the surprise factor was gone. But this year I hope to do things differently...they have no idea what I am planning and it won't be expensive.

Over here Grinch (I like that name for you LOL), it is summer at Christmas time, so I might suggest you move over this way The only thing I don't like about Christmas at summer time is that all the house lights don't flash until 9.30pm...but that's okay because we are usually out in the street with the neighbours at that time drinking and discussing affairs of the land.

    I can't help loving Christmas...its still a novelty for me...and my kids.

Grinch needs to try Christmas in warm sunny Australia with sizzling steak on the bbq and bowls of salad and corn on the cob...kinda like a picture of paradise on one of the WT publications hehehe.

ReBorn, I too dislike Christmas, have for 30 years. And, I wasn't raised a JW. When my daughters were small, I did Christmas to see them enjoy it, although, I didn't. They never knew until a few years ago.

The reason, I believe, that I have come to dislike it so much, besides the crass commercialism, is that I spent two Christmas's in Vietnam. During this time, we would have a three day stand down, sort of a truce. Unfortunately, "Charlie" didn't celebrate Christmas, so we doubled the guards. Of course, I pulled the duty on both, first time as a guard and the second, as the Sergeant of the Guard. Sitting all night in a bunker, armed to the teeth, and staring out into the darkness, your mind wanders a lot, trying to deal with your fears and hoping and praying that no one decides to come through the wire tonight. Still, your eyes and ears are alert, but my thoughts kept coming back to Christmas. I realized what a phoney holiday it was and that if we were supposed to be celebrating the birth of Jesus, what the hell am I doing sitting here ready to kill anything that moved and wasn't identifiable. On the occassions that he did come through the wire, it became a mad house.

Christmas has never been the same for me. Add to that, my first wife had to orchestrate every single move on Christmas morning and I just came to be Christmas free.

However, just like with my daughters, and even though I really don't like the day, I will do what I can to help my grandsons enjoy the majic I felt for Christmas as a child myself. After all, that is what Christmas is really about, making the kids feel special and so what if we let them believe in a mythical figure for a few years, it's a part of the majic of being a child.

My apologies to any that look forward to Christmas. I don't mean to demean your celebration and hope all that do celebrate it have a wonderful time. But for me, other than for my grandsons, I will continue doing without it.

you're not a grinch, reborn, you just don't like it, and i can understand why. i really get into the whole thing, i mean, stringing lights and baking cookies. i just like having an excuse to have this fresh-smelling tree in my house and colored lights all over the place. you do that any other time of year and people call you crazy

but we don't buy lots of presents. in fact, i avoid the malls that time of year - people are supposed to be happy and everywhere you look they all look slightly enraged...

wow, dakota, i never knew that. (((you)))
