    Alex, you are thinking along the same lines as me. I can imagine they must sincerely think that if Prisca goes through the Watchtower with her niece she might get a "Road to Damascus" type of experience. It was so stage managed!

    (((Prisca))) I don't know what to say other than they sincerely think you are going to die at Armageddon, and will do anything to reel you back in the troof again! It's their twisted way of showing you love. I really feel for you, it's just an awful situation. When Jehovah's Witnesses' righteous indignation turns into blackmail and manipulative and aggressive behaviour, it's just deplorable. An example of this that I've personally experienced is the way my dad communicated to me the importance of doing things Jehovah's way while I was growing up. If I didn't want to go out on the service on a Saturday or Sunday morning he would make all kind of threats to me about Armageddon, and Jehovah's judgement of me, and stuff to frighten me into changing my mind. He would never believe me if I said I was unwell! Oddly, I would always feel better if I actually went afterward - because it would mean if the END came on Saturday night I would be saved!!!

    Sorry to hear about this Prisca <img src='/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif' align=middle>

    First of all, as others have said, completely underhanded and sneaky of your brother-in-law to pull a stunt like this.

    Second, I think you're in a catch-22 situation, because even if you DID as he requested, who's to say he wouldn't turn around and tell everyone you 'usurped his headship' by helping his daughter "study" her Watchtower?? Remember, it's HIS job, according to Watchtower law, to study with his daughter, not yours.

    Another thing on headship: Watchtower law gives him the "privilege" of headship over your sister and their daughter. His headship doesn't extend to you. If he was my brother-in-law, I'd remind him of that little factoid (and then tell him to piss up a tree when the niece wasn't around).

    If he ever pulls another stunt of this sort, I would be very quick to say to the niece: "S******, I'm sorry your father is using you to make me look bad. I hope you'll understand someday why I can't let him put me in that position. You know I love you very much and always will, no matter what."

    <hugs>
    Love, Scully

    Thank you to everyone for your responses. I didn't expect so many so soon.

    It was a very unfair situation they put me in. I am endeavouring to do just as Cassiline said: I am trying to set an example for my niece, to show that people who are not JWs can live happy and full lives.

    I'm sorry you had to go through that. It really turns my stomach to hear that some people are so manipulative. Especially when it involves a small child like that. I'm glad your sister cooled things off for you a little. I hope she can see through her hubby's antics. Just keeping loving that little girl. When she gets older, she'll remember it. I have an aunty that loved me through and through, no matter what my family was like. She is no longer my aunty (due to divorce) but I will always remember her unconditional love and kindness. We still talk and email and visit with each other when we can...I still love and totally respect her.

    Prisca, it's just so unfair that they are unable to respect your decision. My family thinks that by getting me to read something out of the watchtower, I will see the error of my ways and run back to the Kingdom Hall. Not bloody likely!

    Prisca, I think is noteworthy that it seems to be your BIL not your sister who is initiating this. She knows and loves you better. He also has his image as a brother "in the truth" to get you in line as a extended family member.

    Your sister sounds like she still retains empathy and love. Don't let him get under your skin. BIL's can be a pain even if they aren't JWs.
