I Put the Kingdom First - By Sheree Stokell

    I put the kingdom first
So they dunked me in a pool
    Armageddon would be here soon
So I dropped out of school.

    I put the kingdom first
Served where the need is great
Married at 18 to the first boy
Who took me on a date.

    I put the kingdom first;
    The boy was a pioneer
    But after the wedding day
I was only worth his sneer.

    I put the kingdom first
    And never made a sound
    I kept up wifely submission
    While he slapped me around.

    I put the kingdom first
    Went to assemblies ill
    But even a nervous breakdown
    Couldn’t keep me still.

    I put the kingdom first
    I raised my children well
When they hollered at the hall
I smacked them both to hell.

    I put the kingdom first
    And never had a job
My husband cheated and then left
    Me without even two bob.

    I put the kingdom first
    Not my daughter or son
They’ve left and gone their way
And them I have to shun.

    I put the kingdom first
    Pioneered in pained old age
But soon the end will come!
And Jehovah will pay my wage.

    I put the kingdom first
Now I cannot use my feet
They trundle me out once a year
But I never get a greet.

    I’m a Jehovah’s Witness
    Who put the kingdom first
    It’s been tough and life’s been hard;

    Now I’m in a hearse.

Okay, now I'm totally depressed. That could be referring to my mom. Except for the hearse part. She's not quite there yet.

Can you find a poem about being free?

I wrote that sad one. I'll have to write a free one. One like how a little flower opens up and receives the sun for the first time. Or how the frog climbs out of her well and raises her tadpoles in freedom. Or an ugly little bird who escapes his cage and then his feathers grow back beautiful and he can fly all over the world. I will try to be inspired to write something more happy :)

I like those images. Thank you.

I could feel your pain through your poem.

    It made my heart hurt.

I thought of my mom alone, alienated from most of her family, still clinging to the hope of paradise. Of the new order fixing everything.

How she secretly hopes my non jw sisters will maybe die before the big A so she can straighten everything out in paradise.

Her plan b is to adopt some motherless child in paradise and start over.*sigh*

    So depressing.

She sounds like a nice lady who's been caught up in something too powerful for her. She's a prisoner. I really hope she wakes up.

    Wow!

    How true!

So many lives ruined by the organization....

That is called "bloodguilt" isnt it!?

Maybe that should read: "I Put the Organisation First".

    Very sad though..

Julia, she's 87 years old. If she wakes up it will be on her death bed. She converted when She was in her 30s. The "Truth" is all she has left. None her kids except me will talk to her.

Thanks for that poem. You summed up a JWs life eloquently.
