sammie - I have no sympathy for gun culture but I am totally puzzled by your specious comparison.

you can't tell the difference between story telling and reality.

    ----

As an adult I understand the difference - a childs mind doesn't. Sorry that you can't figure that one out.

I personally don't have a problem with a youngster taking classes to learn how to use a weapon and to train how to clean them and store them safely etc., but I recognize the absolute hypocrisy of anyone who shows a photo of a 7 year old holding a gun as some banner of the evils on the world - when you have a picture of kids, not just the kid with the Uzi, but lots of little kids, holding weapons and prefer to imagine that in your world, a picture of a kid holding a gun is somehow right or better.

The insistance that your kid isn't being trained to kill people is based on your assumption they won't - anytime a person has a weapon, the consequence could be they take a life and the reality is that they should be prepared to do so.

Like I said - try if you can to take a step back - if someone outside your culture didn't have access to video games but they saw kids all the same age holding guns and watching the same violence on a box - they wouldn't for a minute understand how you can divide the two and proclaim that one is ethically right while the other is not.

    That was my point -

    Really?

A child can't tell the difference between a video game and actually decapitating a human being?

sammie: The USA has 100,000 gun victims a year - that's no small number.

    sammie-

I'm not arguing for or against guns. But, if you are going to argue for or against guns, at least use real numbers.

I don't know where you got this figure, but it's not even close to being accurate (it's wildly overstated).

i think Sammie has a point, to an outsider the two are not so different....

ISIS- where did they learn the beheading practice: Saudia Arabia executes by beheading, they average one execution per day....

Yeah, but since sammie's argument is based on "what if" scenarios involving aliens and bogus statistics, how solid is the foundation?

    .

Also, using sammie's fantasy scenario, if an 8 year old ISIS jihadi just shot or decapitated a person for real, you could then have them play Nintendo or watch a movie depicting the same thing...then expect them to say the video game/movie was exactly like the real thing. Ridiculous.

Is Sammie's number really that far out? US statistics from Factcheck.org:

    Gun Murders in 2010 - 11,078

    Gun Suicides in 2010 - 19,392

    Non-fatal gun injuries in 2011 - 55,544

So about 86,000 gun victims in the US per year.

The numbers for knifes could be close to guns. Do liberals want to ban knifes also? I still can't believe someone could equate American parents teaching children to shoot or letting them play video games as teaching them to kill the same as ISIS is doing in their recruitment of children into their Islamic terriorist organization to behead abd kill innocent people.

AlphaMan - not sure if your comment was aimed at me but I was simply pointing out that Shirley's claim that Sammie's figure of 100,000 gun victims per annum in the US was fr from the 'wild overstatement' that he claimed it was.

I fully agree with you that what ISIS is doing is completely different to learning to shoot.
