Orange County lawsuit alleges sex abuse by Jehovah's Witness leader

Two men said they were abused in Laguna Hills as teenagers.

Two men who say they were molested as teenagers by a Jehovah’s Witness church leader in south Orange County filed a lawsuit against him and the church this week.

The lawsuit says the men were abused in middle school and high school in the 1990s, but “did not begin to discover the causal relationship between the molestation and adulthood psychological injuries until after news broke in September of 2011 regarding the rampant sexual abuse of children by Jerry Sandusky at Penn State University.”

Their complaint, filed Monday in Orange County Superior Court, seeks unspecified damages from the local and national church organizations and from the man accused of carrying out the abuse. It alleges sexual battery and negligence.

Local Jehovah’s Witness officials could not immediately be reached Wednesday, and the church’s main legal and public information offices in New York didn’t respond to requests for comment.

The accusers – identified as “John Roe 1 and John Roe 2” – are represented by Irvine and San Diego law firms that specialize in sexual abuse cases.

“Any time you file a lawsuit, they understand that the allegations are going to be a matter of public record,” said Irwin Zalkin, one of their attorneys. “They’ve chosen that route to bring attention and awareness to what is a substantial problem in this organization.”

Both accusers, who still live in Orange County, also are seeking compensation to pay for treatment to deal with the psychological effects of the abuse, Zalkin said. He said the abuse happened in or near Laguna Hills.

The man accused of the abuse is identified as “Doe 3” or “Perpetrator.” Zalkin said California law bars naming defendants in initial complaints in such cases but that the man’s identity will likely become public later.

He is identified as a baptized “publisher,” ministerial servant and “pioneer” within the church.

All baptized Jehovah’s Witnesses are ordained ministers, the church website says.

The accusers were recruited to the church as boys by Jehovah’s Witnesses knocking on doors, the lawsuit says. Neither of their families was involved with the church.

The lawsuit gives the following account of the abuse:

Doe 3 was assigned to give private Bible lessons to John Roe 1 and met John Roe 2 when the two were assigned to do “field service” for the church in the same group.

Doe 3 took both boys to dinner separately. He also brought the boys to his house at different times, gave each one mixed drinks, undressed in front of them, showered with them and touched them sexually.

John Roe 1, now 29, says he was abused from the sixth to ninth grades. John Roe 2, now 31, says he was abused from the eighth to 11th grades. After Doe 3 was caught in bed with a married man, the lawsuit says, John Roe 2 reported the abuse he’d suffered.

John Roe 2 told the Elders he wanted to call the police, but the Elders discouraged this and insisted on handling the matter ‘in house,’” the complaint says.

After a church “judicial committee” heard the case, the lawsuit says, Doe 3 was disfellowshipped, a move similar to excommunication in some faiths, but the police were never told.

The borg has been happy to "sacrifice" it's children/teens on the alter of abuse just to avoid sullying it's name.

The very thing they have accused the catholic church of doing- for years.

Jehovahs Witnesses are just a small sect compared to say , the Catholic Church worlwide , and the catholic church with over a billion members and a substantial number of preists is rightly under scrutiny for the sexual abuse that has gone on for decades and the church`s cover up / mishandling of such abuse.

Jehovahs Witnesses are only about 8 million worldwide , and every baptised person ,male or female ,young or old , is recognised as an ordained minister .

With the number of cases that have so far come to light worldwide , seems to suggest to me that their is a far greater problem in the Jehovahs Witness religion than their is in the Catholic Church.

And the big problem that seems to go unnoticed , is that all these baptised , ordained ministers of Jehovah have the freedom to go knocking on everyones door .

Are they screened by appropiate authourities ? Do they have police checks ?

Are pedophiles , child sexual abusers , calling on peoples homes under the guise of being a minister of a religion ?

The religous organisations themselves have proved to be ineffective in managing this problem , often times doing an inhouse investigation , covering it up so as not to bring reproach on the organisation , and not reporting it to the appropiate authourities ,such as the police.

What about when parents are out for one reason or another and their children are home alone .?

Here we go. This is close. I hope the register keeps tabs on this case as it progresses. It will be interesting to find out the name.

I'm just wondering how much punishment they can take. The thing that gets me is just how oblivious those in the congregation are to it. They have just got no idea that this problem even exists. When I tried to bring this topic up with my uber dub relative I got told to " not read overseas news papers because it would confuse me". Now I just keep my mouth shut for fear of ending up in the back room and getting the apostate label. They are going to have to fess up pretty soon. Sooner they do it the better off they will be.

Joe, when I "liked" a newspaper article from overseas on FB, a still-in dub messaged me that she was shocked to see me visiting "apostate" websites. It was a NEWSPAPER, people!

Same thing will happen if JWNers post the above story...the minute a dub sees that the article "speaks against" the bOrg, they instantly label it as "apostate" and by connection, the poster becomes an "apostate".

    WAKE UP, you active Witnesses!

Sex Abuse is really happening and your fellow JWs are doing it. These crimes have continually been hidden by your elders for decades, and people are still being sexually abused in your congregations.

smiddy, I've thought the same. The amount of paedophilia scandals in the Borg is massive compared to other religions of the same size. I think someone should create a "paedophilia scandals per head" table, it would be no surprise if JW was at the top ahead of the Catholic Church, etc.

Burdens of proof exist. Tawdry allegations are not facts. When you accuse a remote actor, you must ramp up your factual details. If this is all the evidence that can be mustered against the WT, the WT will win a summary judgment motion. A judge is not likely to share a strong bias against the WT.

    Highest per capita, huh?

Funny; I was talking to a relative (a fellow fader) who was largely unfamiliar with the WTS's pedo problem, but even she acknowledged that the degree of the problem was probably the highest amongst JWs (as opposed to other religions) because of the Org's habit of always trying to "handle it internally", as she said.
