I think unity in belief after a common cause can be an evolutionary advantage, especially when our "tribe" or even our "species" is under threat. Haidt calls this trait to swarm to be "part bee". Consider how many countries rallied to a common cause during WWII. Consider how much effort was expended, at great individual personal sacrifice, to that cause.
