Exactly. They've basically twisted what Jesus meant to mean an era or epoch.

    Examples of ERA

    1. the era of the horse and buggy
    2. We're just now entering an era of great prosperity.
    3. His death marks the end of an era.
    Examples of generations

    • The Lost Generation, also known as the Generation of 1914 in Europe, [19] is a term originating with Gertrude Stein to describe those who fought in World War I. The members of the lost generation were typically born between 1883 and 1900.
    • The Silent Generation, also known as the "Lucky Few", were born 1925 through 1942. It includes those who were too young to join the service during World War II. It includes most of those who fought during the Korean War. Many had fathers who served in World War I. Generally recognized as the children of the Great Depression, this event during their formative years had a profound impact on them.
    • The Baby Boomers are the generation that was born following World War II, generally from 1946 up to 1964, a time that was marked by an increase in birth rates. The term "baby boomer" is sometimes used in a cultural context. Therefore, it is impossible to achieve broad consensus of a precise date definition. [21] The baby boom has been described variously as a "shockwave" [22] and as "the pig in the python." [23] In general, baby boomers are associated with a rejection or redefinition of traditional values; however, many commentators have disputed the extent of that rejection, noting the widespread continuity of values with older and younger generations. In Europe and North America boomers are widely associated with privilege, as many grew up in a time of affluence. [22] One of the features of Boomers was that they tended to think of themselves as a special generation, very different from those that had come before them. In the 1960s, as the relatively large numbers of young people became teenagers and young adults, they, and those around them, created a very specific rhetoric around their cohort, and the change they were bringing about. [24]
    • Generation X is generally defined as those born after the Post–World War II baby boom ended. Demographers, historians and commentators use beginning birth dates from the early 1960s to the early 1980s. [25] [26] [27] [28] [29] The term has also been used in different times and places for a number of different subcultures or countercultures since the 1950s. [30]
    • Generation Z is a name used (although other terms exist) for the cohort of people born from the early 2000s to the present day who are distinct fro

Yep, it's crap. The important thing to remember is that JEHOVAH(tm) has become King!! It's kind of confusing because he never really stopped being King, but then Jesus was made King in 1914, but now..now Jehovah is King. Err, mmm, yeah, that's it.

Great analysis Scotoma! For further proof, just read Job 42:16.

I am stunned by this article. They are putting themselves right back in the position they were with the original generation teaching, by adding an end date to the generation teaching. This new definition has, till now, been left vague enough to all it to run for quite some time, but the January article makes it clear that the overlapping ones are also advanced in years.

"They were anointed with holy spirit during the time that those of the first group were still on earth. ... Today, those in this second group are themselves advancing in years. Yet, Jesus’ words at Matthew 24:34 give us confidence that at least some of “this generation will by no means pass away” before seeing the start of the great tribulation. "

This is really trying to increase the urgency, based on the generation definition being a short period. It seems the current GB are trying to keep the status quo for how the organisation has always been, and then let the next lot of GB members have to pick up the pieces from the mess they leave behind.

Further, as you mention, there is no reason to conclude this generation applies to two groups of annointed. It is one of the more blatant examples of the Watchtower adding an interpretation that simply has no basis at all. I wonder how JWs will take it? They are walking dangerous ground dwelling on this teaching again.

GB: " We don't know what the hell we are doing, but we need to keep a sense of urgency."

Writing Dept : " Ok, what do we do?"

GB: " Figure something out. Things are getting serious, this internet thing is killing us."

W.D: " Maybe we are wrong about the whole " generation " thing?

GB: " No, that's not it. We have screwed up way too many times. Figure it out, or you will be re-assigned to where the need is great, probably Nigeria or some shit like that."

W.D " Ok. What about this, " "They were anointed with holy spirit during the time that those of the first group were still on earth. ... Today, those in this second group are themselves advancing in years. Yet, Jesus’ words at Matthew 24:34 give us confidence that at least some of “this generation will by no means pass away” before seeing the start of the great tribulation." ???

GB: " That's good for now, get out."

The referent to "this generation" of Matthew 24:34 is Jesus' description of "this generation" in Matthew 23:33-39, which prompts the disciples question of, "When will these things (another referent to the same antecedent) be" in 24:3.

In WTspeak, "we understand" is a referent to the thought that 'This is what we believe.' If you don't, you are not one of US.'

    Bobcat,

So Jesus said "this generation" in Matt 23:33-39, which the GB believes has a secondary fulfillment made up of 2 groups of modern-day JW anointed. That's their referent for "this generation" in Matt 24:34. So the pre-concieved belief, dogma actually, of the WTBTS leaders is the "proof" that their current "understanding" is correct.

In other words, ' We belive that Jesus was talking about our current understanding of "generation", therefore, Jesus was talking about our current understanding. Otherwise, Jesus would not have mentioned our current understanding at Matt 23:33-39.'

It reminds me of something else:

WHY TRUST "THE FAITHFUL AND DISCREET SLAVE"

There are many reasons to have complete trust in the slave class. First and foremost, Jesus has appointed them over all his precious "belongings." This is a clear indication that he has complete trust in them. - OD, p. 18 – [Italics in original]

DD: Why should I trust you?

    GB: Jesus does.

DD: How do I know that?

GB: He put us in charge of his belongings.

DD: How do I know that?

GB: He has complete trust in us.

DD: How do I know that?

GB: He put us in charge of his belongings.

    DD: What about this:

WHEN DOES JESUS ARRIVE, OR COME?

A further consideration of Jesus’ prophecy indicates that an adjustment in our understanding of the timing of certain aspects of Jesus’ prophecy is needed. … So it is reasonable to conclude that Jesus’ arrival to appoint the faithful slave over all his belongings, mentioned at Matthew 24:46, 47, also applies to his future coming, during the great tribulation. 1 -Watchtower, July 15, 2013, p. 8, paragraphs 17 & 18 – [Italics in original]

GB: You are DF'd for apostasy.
