  Theres an even easier way to see the parallel, in the calendar. I know everybody knows xmas is not jesus real birthday, that is not the point. However at sometime when this date was adopted, it didnt seem to bother christians otherwise it would not have stuck. His death is also another atrological day - the spring equinox. In fact Nearly all the major jewish holidays are around equinoxes and solstices. The lords day was also changed to the day of the Sun, Sunday and again this must have been accepted without problems because it has stuck.

  Its also interesting to look at the architecture of cathedrals and other basilicas. Look at St Peters, it like thte temple in jerusalem all point east. They have zodiacs as part of the construction and more.

  This subject regarding the kinship of Jesus and many other gods has been discussed here endlessly.

  Certainly hundreds and hundreds of times.

  Well, maybe not hundreds but certainly many dozens of times.

  Many, may be too many, but it has to be at least ten times that this subject has come up.

  Ummm, it could be a few less than ten, but at least five or six times that we all talked about this.

  Twice, yes, two times I'm almost sure of.

  Actually, this could be a first.

  This is an interesting thread, I am sure the conjecture that old sun-god myths, and other pagan ideas, have been adopted in to the story of Jesus is correct.

  It is difficult to establish which is reliable scholarship on this, and which is simply opinion and conjecture.

  I remember reading as a young man the Rev. Hislop's "The Two Babylons" in which much of this stuff is presented, I didn't realise as a callow youth that his scholarship was dreadful, but I was disturbed by the many parallels from ancient myths and the Jesus story, why should they exist ? I asked myself.

  vivaVegas - fascinating but instead of arguing against you I'm going to stick with what my old professor taught me which was to not take a dismissive attitude towards research that looks for and focuses only on similarities (like Frazer whom you cite as source in post 4 above) because I think there is something fascinating and original that can come out of such research. So I'm going to suggest another similarity between the figures and myths you discuss - that of mystery religion. Jesus, Horus, Dionysus and others were prominent in mystery cult/ritual and initiation via divine knowledge to be born again.

  edit: in fact I would go even further and suggest that when we adopt science as our medium of communication we are being born again through initiation into divine knowledge- a kind of initiation into mysterious things and even provides a new and enlightening footing for looking at the world. (of course it ceases to be mysterious to us but can be very mysterious to others)

  edit: found some interesting research on Horus on wiki which to me highlights some more similarities (although I prefer complementarity over similarity)
