Hello, Braehead.
You mentioned George Orwell's "1984." In fact, there is a book by ex-JW's comparing the world of Orwell's book to JW's. It's called "The Orwellian World of Jehovah's Witnesses," and it's written by Gary and Heather Botting.

My parents never disassociated me. My love for my parents is only now matched with their love for me and my family.
Likewise, I never posed a big objection to the religion, my parents too became JWs in their 20's and brought me up in the faith.
It can be done, it should be noted that it might be harder in this particular faith but it can be done, where there's mutual respect for
one another. Some of the reason why some people hold their religion so rigidly is because they have trouble believing it themselves.
