I always liked the apoctalyptic b-movies that channel USA showed back in the day with Gilbert Godfrey and Rhonda Up All Night. Couple months ago I made a weekend out of watching b-movies On Demand. Repo Man was classic, best Emilio Estevez film ever.

I've seen a few apocalyptic sci-fi movies, but I've yet to see a cinematic adaptation of Revelations that really grabbed me.

Horensia, thanks for reminding us of those old and excellent books. Excellent thread.
eva luna, I also keep a small moleskine in my bag and a larger one on my desk for thoughts. I usually give one or two as gifts to friends at Christmas time.
Blondie, I read Alas, Babylon years ago and just recently bought a new copy of the book. I wanted to read it again.
Everyone, thanks for all the book titles. Oh! so many good books and so little time.
PHG.

I've always liked Kurt Vonnegut's work; Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse-Five, especially.

"Earth Abides" (The title is drawn from Eccl 1:4 KJV) Read it as a teenager. Seems like the final chapter was titled, "The Last American."
The drama centers around the San Francisco area
HBO had a remake of "On The Beach" a few years ago. Also saw the original.
"Threads" (BBC Docudrama - Viewable on Youtube.)
Somewhat similar to "The Day After" but from a British perspective.
"Testament" is similar genre.
I read parts of "The Road," but did not see the movie. Thought the relationship between the boy and his father was very moving, well written.

When Worlds Collide - saw the movie, available here, have the ebook of it and the sequel, After Worlds Collide.
Alas, Babylon - read it when I was 14, read it again early this year. It holds up really well. I have an ebook of it now so I will give away the hard copy.
One Second After is a great updated version of that kind of story.
The William Johnstone Ashes series is good for the first 10-15 books, but gets really lean for ideas by around #25 of 35. Whole sections of dialog and plot get lifted and repeated with different characters in later books. Events get retconned so that different characters are remembered to have done things than what originally happened. The author was ill late in the series, and I suspect some ghost writing was going on. I started reading them about 20 years ago, and got half way through. Early this year I got the whole set of ebooks, finished reading the series, and sold off my hard copies for a tidy sum.
Since I am such a great and wonderful guy, I will share a free full length movie of another favorite, the Last Man on Earth, with Vincent Price. Enjoy!

I remember watching the original as a teen, for a class in high school. It was during the 80's, when the cold war was still alive and well. It disturbed me greatly.

On The Beach was an interesting novel, but it was decidedly biased in an effort to be strongly anti-war.
The pervasiveness of the nuclear fallout and the length of time it persisted are not sustained in reality.

I read "On the Beach" as a teenager and was strongly affected by it. It made me a pacifist for a long time. I think it was meant to be strongly anti-war.

If I remember correctly (and I may not), the story line of the original "On The Beach" involved a war between the US and China using "Cobalt Bombs."
I remember my dad used to talk about such devices. In my day (my heyday), it was the nuetron bomb that caused a stir. Although it was not intended for such longlasting radioactive effects. It was more intended to even the 'playing field' of Western Europe. In the 70s (in my military days), we used to war game against the Soviets expecting a single US brigade to have to go up against 3 armored Warsaw Pact divisions. Everyone quietly expected it to go nuclear within days, if not sooner - if it ever happened.
