We just watched the 1970 movie of No Blade of Grass tonight. Missed in 1970 when I was only 18 and a naive jw. I saw On the Beach (and read)when Fred Astaire chose to die in his sports car.
I read Planet of the Apes in my 15th summer long before the movies.
The Time Machine was another favorite that summer.
The Shape of Things to Come.
When Worlds Collide
The Postman
A Boy and his Dog
Childhood's End
The Long Tomorrow
Alas, Babylon
The Stand
Z for Zachariah
The Children of Men
One second after. which is about an EMP attack on America that brings us to the dark ages literally.
I spent a lot of time hiding out in the library as a kid, reading science fiction. If anyone had paid attention to what I was reading -- any JW that is -- they would have freaked out.
I think it's interesting that people have known/figured out for a long time the possible/probable outcomes of the things governments and corporations do. However, they go on doing it, don't they? Now they are too late to really do much about climate change.
I have to say I love science fiction. Another one that turned out to be right, although not as imagined exactly, is Asimov's "The Dead Past." No privacy any more -- we're tracked on all our little techie toys, as well as CCTV and that sort of thing.
I'll have to go back and reread some of those on your list Blondie, I've forgotten them.
Eva Luna - I don't have a moleskine, just little pieces of paper in my purse with lists of stuff I want to find.
I enjoyed the Cormac McCarthy novel "The Road".
Yesterday, I attended several lectures at the university. One of them in particular was about the current apocalyptic science facts. This was from professors that have a good track record of economic and ecologic predictions. Rather grim, but provided strategic advice on how to adjust and get on with life.
Sigh. Now I have to convince myself that it's worth it to get back to studying, when I feel so doomed.
I haven't read that one, Mr.Freeze. Added to my list.
I enjoyed the Cormac McCarthy novel "The Road".
Also a film. Dark, but engrossing. Robert Duvall has a part that is one of his best.
