the short answer is lead in itself does not serve as a clock, but the ratio of (isotopes) of lead and other isotopes do. By knowing the rate the isotopes are converted one get a dating method.
Bohm....That makes sense. Easy to grasp. Like C14 and C12 diamond and coal, as an example. The more diamond there is the more time has passed. If there is lots of coal and less diamond more time needs to pass for diamond to be produced, (in the corect pressure and temps of course). I grasp the concept though.
