Gambling involves the exchange of money without any exchange of real goods. A stock, however, represents an actual share in the ownership of a business. Trading stocks can thus be viewed as the buying and selling of legitimate goods.—ED.

Ah great! Then playing in a poker game is okay. I am investing in some real goods, these playing cards, you see.

Watchtower bible tract society jehovah's witnesses say it is okay to play poker

This from the people who told me over and over that going to college was "storing up treasures on earth, rather than in heaven."

    A bunch of fucking assholes.

BTW - what the hell is this thing anyway? Hedge funds?

I would argue that games like poker and blackjack aren't really gambling but games of skill

    What is HEDGE FUNDS:

    Hedge fund

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A hedge fund is an investment fund that can undertake a wider range of investment and trading activities than other funds, but which is generally only open to certain types of investors specified by regulators. These investors are typically institutions, such aspension funds, university endowments and foundations, or high-net-worth individuals, who are considered to have the knowledge or resources to understand the nature of the funds. As a class, hedge funds invest in a diverse range of assets, but they most commonly trade liquid securities on public markets. They also employ a wide variety of investment strategies, and make use of techniques such as short selling and leverage.

Hedge funds are typically open-ended, meaning that investors can invest and withdraw money at regular, specified intervals. The value of an investment in a hedge fund is calculated as a share of the fund's net asset value, meaning that increases and decreases in the value of the fund's investment assets (and fund expenses) are directly reflected in the amount an investor can later withdraw.

Most hedge fund investment strategies aim to achieve a positive return on investment whether markets are rising or falling. Hedge fund managers typically invest their own money in the fund they manage, which serves to align their interests with investors in the fund. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] A hedge fund typically pays its investment manager a management fee, which is a percentage of the assets of the fund, and a performance fee if the fund's net asset value increases during the year. Some hedge funds have a net asset value of several billion dollars. As of 2009, hedge funds represented 1.1% of the total funds and assets held by financial institutions. [ 3 ] As of April 2012, the estimated size of the global hedge fund industry was US$2.13 trillion. [ 4 ]

Because hedge funds are not sold to the public or retail investors, the funds and their managers have historically not been subject to the same restrictions that govern other funds and investment fund managers with regard to how the fund may be structured and how strategies and techniques are employed. Regulations passed in the United States and Europe after the 2008 credit crisis are intended to increase government oversight of hedge funds and eliminate certain regulatory gaps. [ 5 ]

Thanks for posting. It hardly looks as though the WT cares about how ethical the investments are, the Fund Manager is going to go for greatest profit, not for ethical investments.

The WT will excuse themselves if called on this by saying that the responsibility for that lies with the fund manager , not them.

The R&F JW would be most disconcerted by this, though it can be presented as a wise way of handling funds as Blondie says, it will all look most dodgy to J W's

Most would not believe it at first if you simply told them the W.T has a Chief Investment Officer !

All the "spare" money begged by the WT from Congregations and Circuits going straight in to an Investment Fund run by worldly people ?

I don't think many JW's will feel happy and comfortable about this.

The problem that I see is the hypocrisy. Rank-and-file are told repeatedly to the point of feeling guilty that they should have only food, clothing, and shelter as thier ultimate goal. As BOC said, if you want to try and better your situation in life by getting more education then prepare to be demonized. A brother with a position in the congregation can lose that position if his child goes to college. The hypocrisy is that while telling the rank and file they can not be educated, they use the " educated " to further thier own interests in the name of God. They are not using the rank-and-files contributions to further the rank-and-files interests at all. I bet people would feel differently if there were actual freedom in the JW org, and not the additional laundry list of hypocritical actions, and crimes, and lies. They do what they want and YOU do what they want. I believe they will reap what they sow.
