Actually both stake and cross, are correct. Christ laid a stake and was nailed to it. He was then suspended from the vertical beam forming the cross. So Christ laid a stake and was nailed him to it and then he was hung on another stake that was in vertical pocision . -

Matthew 27:37--- "Also, they posted above his head the charge against him, in writing: " This is Jesus the king of the Jews." this PROVES Jesus died on a CROSS. Otherwise, Matthew would have stated " they posted above his hands the charge against him."
