    GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Church members held a man until deputies arrived after they said he stabbed his wife while she was attending a bible study Thursday.

Greenville County deputies said they were called to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 1400 Old Spartanburg Rd. about 2:15 p.m. where they found church members holding 46-year-old Leonard Edwards Jr. in the sanctuary and his wife lying on the floor with a stab wound to the back.

Church members told deputies that Edwards arrived at the church while his wife was attending a bible study and asked for her to come out of the church, which she did.

His wife immediately ran back inside with Edwards chasing after her carrying a knife, deputies said. They said he knocked her down and stabbed her in the back before the members could stop and detain him.

Edwards was arrested and charged with attempted murder. Deputies said additional charges were pending and he will have a bond hearing later Thursday.

My guess is that he wasn't a JW. Because we know that if it was a JW that committed the crime, the congregation would have first called the WT Legal Department for direction on whether they should call the police and an ambulence.

Yes- and she would be dead..because they would WAIT...untill they got the callback before calling an ambulance.....

    What a horrific event.

My best guess is that he's not a JW and objected rather strenuously to his wife studying "the Bible" (actually, studying a book which contains scattered Bible citations) with JWs. There are no congregation meetings at 2:15 PM on weekdays. She probably had to "sneak" in her study away from home due to her husband's objection.

It would probably be a good time to share with her, while she's recovering, the recent WT article which condones JW women staying with their violent & abusive husbands.

Horrible situation. However you know this will fuel their persecution complex. See? Satan is trying to stop you from Jehovah!

This may be a case where one person committed a crime and the Jehovah's Witnesses are not at fault. It appears they handled things well by doing something. They appear to have restrained him and they probably called 911.

However, it could be that the wife was pressured into staying in an abusive relationship by the Society's literature or the congregations elders. If so, they may be partly liable for what happened.

They probably went over the "Selma" article with her.
