As far as movies go, wasn't anything with an R rating a no-no ?

I was in Junior high School when Me & Mrs Jones came out, and I remember that being a no-no although I bought the record.

Had to hide my Richard Pryor albums

None of these were "banned". R-rated movies were definitely discouraged heavily, and then I guess there are just random geographical/congregational pet peeves which are certainly not persistent over all of JWs. An example of this is Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I don't know a single witness that would bat an eye at that song. Everyone loves the Beatles.

I know one congregation that had a real problem with O Brother Where Art Thou?

The story is they were on a bus trip coming back from Bethel, and they put the movie into play. An elder turned the video off and scolded everyone because they had just had an upbuilding trip to Bethel and did not need to watch such garbage.

However I also knew an elder's wife that was just crazy about the movie, and would sing all of the songs---including the religious ones. When the Soggy Bottom Boys (I think that's what they called themselves) went on tour singing the songs, she took a big group to see them, including all her children. Lot's of Babylon the Greats songs in that line up.
