We've had these price controls in Canada forever (well, at least 40 years), and the cost of booze is inflated by hidden taxes. This could very well be a tax grab by your government.

Face it, if people want to drink, or self-medicate with alcohol, they will buy it, no matter the cost. The gov't knows that.

and yah, I thought the same thing, Cofty, but see that Ballistic already clarified for you. I remember learning that old WWI song in jr. high, "pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile - while you've a lucifer to light your fag, smile boys that's the style"

I buy a fifth of Teachers here in Oregon for about $23.00. Prices vary greatly from state to state. Across the river in Washington the same bottle would be $30.00 while down in California it would be about $16.00.

What does a fifth of everyday scotch like Teachers go for at a UK take-away? (converted to US $)

You can get a bottle of Bell's from Tesco, our biggest supermarket chain, for £15.50 which is about $24.50. If you aren't fussy what you drink you can get a bottle of their own brand scotch for £9.97, or $15.78. Around here the supermarkets tend to be cheaper than the off-licences, or bottle shops.

Here in the Netherlands the government is planning on raising the taxes on alcohol with 50%.

Guess I'll start building my own still.

Cheapest bottle here would be about $25.00. Anything of a medium quality is at least $30+, ranging up to about $40 for even the least expensive single malt scotch (Glenfiddich).

One thing about being raised a witness and staying in for so long meant for me, was I never took up smoking and only drink in moderation. So increases in fags and booze don't really matter. Being a petrol-head though is costing me. I like cars with at least 3.0 litre engines.

i drink cheap white cider. i buy 2-3 three litre bottles a week---about £3-50 each. i never get drunk on it--or have a hangover. i rarely go into a pub--unless for a meal.

most kids around here get drunk and go wild friday or saturday nights. after that--their benefit giros have all been spent so life is then normal for the next 5 nights.
